Reject this world which will [shortly] abandon you even if you do not like to leave it, and which will make your bodies [grow] old even if you would like to have them rejuvenated.

Reject this world which will [shortly] abandon you even if you do not like...

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to reject the allure of this temporary world. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world, as it will eventually abandon us. Even if we are reluctant to leave it, the world will inevitably leave us. This is a reminder of the transient nature of worldly possessions and the importance of focusing on the eternal life hereafter.

The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that this world will make our bodies grow old, regardless of our desire to rejuvenate them. This highlights the inevitability of aging and the limitations of our physical existence. No matter how much we may desire to maintain our youth and vitality, the passage of time will inevitably take its toll on our bodies.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20:

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse echoes the message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, emphasizing the temporary nature of worldly pursuits. The pleasures and attractions of this world are merely fleeting and illusory. They may bring temporary satisfaction, but they ultimately fade away, leaving us empty-handed. The true purpose of life lies in seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and preparing for the everlasting life in the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Kahf, verse 46, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:

Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.

This verse emphasizes the transitory nature of worldly possessions and highlights the importance of focusing on enduring good deeds. While wealth and children may bring temporary joy and fulfillment, they are not the ultimate purpose of our existence. It is the righteous actions and deeds that we perform for the sake of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that hold true value and will be rewarded in the Hereafter.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize their spiritual journey and focus on the eternal life to come. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world and seek contentment in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By recognizing the temporary nature of worldly pursuits, we can redirect our efforts towards actions that will have everlasting rewards.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us to reject the transient allure of this world and prioritize our spiritual growth. It urges us to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of life and focus on the eternal life hereafter. By seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and performing righteous deeds, we can find true fulfillment and prepare ourselves for the everlasting life to come. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the straight path and grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
