The example of those who have known this world is like a group of travellers who abandon a drought-stricken place and set off for a fruitful and fertile place. Then they endure the difficulties of the path, the hardships of the journey and the coarseness of the food in order to reach their fields of plenty and the place of their [permanent] residence.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he beautifully illustrates the example of those who have knowledge of this world. He compares them to a group of travelers who leave a barren and drought-stricken place in search of a fruitful and fertile land. These travelers willingly endure the difficulties of the journey, the hardships of the path, and the coarseness of the food, all with the aim of reaching their destination - a place of abundance and permanent residence.

Let us delve deeper into the words used in this Hadith to gain a better understanding of its meaning. The word (khayr) "خَيَرَ" in Arabic means "good" or "beneficial." It refers to the knowledge and understanding of this world and its realities. The word (mathal) "مَثَلُ" means "example" or "parable," indicating that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is using this analogy to convey a deeper message.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:64):

And this worldly life is not but diversion and amusement. And indeed, the home of the Hereafter - that is the [eternal] life, if only they knew.

This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of this worldly life and highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding that leads to eternal success in the Hereafter.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:201), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And of them are some who say, 'Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.'

This verse demonstrates the importance of seeking goodness and blessings in both this world and the Hereafter.

Now, let us reflect on the wise message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in this Hadith. The analogy of the travelers leaving a barren land and enduring hardships to reach a place of abundance teaches us several important lessons.

Firstly, it highlights the importance of seeking knowledge and understanding of this world. Just as the travelers leave a place of scarcity, those who possess knowledge of this world recognize its temporary nature and strive for a deeper understanding of its realities. They do not become attached to its fleeting pleasures and distractions.

Secondly, the analogy emphasizes the perseverance and determination required to attain true success. The travelers in the Hadith endure the difficulties of the journey, the hardships of the path, and the coarseness of the food. Similarly, those who seek knowledge and understanding of this world must be willing to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and make sacrifices in their pursuit of truth and righteousness.

Furthermore, the analogy reminds us of the ultimate goal of the believers - attaining the eternal blessings of the Hereafter. Just as the travelers in the Hadith strive to reach a place of abundance and permanent residence, Muslims should strive to attain the everlasting rewards and blessings of the Hereafter by seeking knowledge, practicing righteousness, and fulfilling their obligations towards Allah and His creation.

In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to seek knowledge and understanding of this world, to persevere in the face of challenges, and to strive for the eternal rewards of the Hereafter. It encourages us to detach ourselves from the temporary distractions of this world and to focus on the ultimate goal of attaining Allah's pleasure and eternal success. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and to be among those who seek knowledge and understanding for the sake of His pleasure.
