طُوبى لِلْمُنْكَسِرَةِ قُلُوبُهُمْ مِنْ أجْلِ اللّهِ۔
Blessed are those whose hearts are broken for the sake of Allah.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Heart)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Blessed are those whose hearts are broken for the sake of Allah.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of having a heart that is filled with humility, sincerity, and devotion towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.
The word "munkasirah" in Arabic, which is translated as "broken" in English, refers to a heart that is shattered or softened. It signifies a heart that is deeply affected by the remembrance of Allah, His commands, and His presence. This brokenness is not a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of strength and submission to the will of Allah. It is a state of humility and surrender, where one recognizes their own shortcomings and seeks forgiveness and guidance from Allah.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in the Quran, in Surah Al-Hajj, verse 32:
That [has been commanded], and whoever honors the sacred ordinances of Allah - it is best for him in the sight of his Lord.
This verse highlights the importance of upholding the commands of Allah and honoring His sacred ordinances. When our hearts are broken for the sake of Allah, we become more inclined to follow His commands and seek His pleasure.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 45, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive [to Allah].
This verse emphasizes the need for patience and prayer in times of difficulty. When our hearts are broken for the sake of Allah, we develop a sense of humility and submission, enabling us to seek His help through patience and prayer.
The consequence of having a heart that is broken for the sake of Allah is immense. It leads to a deep connection with Allah, increased spirituality, and a heightened awareness of His presence in our lives. Such individuals are more likely to be guided by the light of Allah's guidance and protected from the darkness of sin and temptation. They become a source of inspiration and guidance for others, as their broken hearts radiate with the love and mercy of Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, encourages us to strive for this blessed state of a broken heart. He reminds us that true success lies in having a heart that is shattered for the sake of Allah. This brokenness is not a physical ailment, but a spiritual state that reflects our deep love and devotion towards our Creator.
Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of purifying our hearts and seeking closeness to Allah. We should strive to develop a deep sense of humility, sincerity, and devotion in our worship. By constantly remembering Allah and reflecting upon His greatness, our hearts will naturally be softened and broken for His sake.
May Allah bless us all with hearts that are broken for His sake and grant us the ability to strive for His pleasure. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and grant us success in this life and the hereafter. And Allah knows best.
