(Ghurar al-Hikam: Divine Decree And Destiny)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The worst of things is displeasure with the divine decree.

This beautiful Hadith highlights the importance of accepting and submitting to the will of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in all aspects of our lives.

Let us first delve into the key words of this Hadith. The word (sakhath) "سَخَطُ" refers to displeasure, anger, or resentment. It signifies a state of being dissatisfied or discontented with a particular situation. The word (al-qada) "الْقَضَاءِ" refers to the divine decree or predestination. It encompasses the belief that everything that occurs in this world is a result of Allah's will and plan.

To understand the significance of this Hadith, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse emphasizes the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes among believers in a just manner. It teaches us that we should not let our personal desires or emotions dictate our actions, but rather adhere to the divine decree and seek justice. Displeasure with the divine decree can lead to oppression and injustice, which are condemned in Islam.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:216), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah knows, while you know not.

This verse reminds us that our limited understanding may lead us to dislike or reject certain situations, but Allah's wisdom surpasses our comprehension. What we perceive as negative or undesirable may actually be beneficial for us in the long run. Therefore, it is crucial to trust in Allah's plan and accept His decree with patience and gratitude.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to cultivate a mindset of acceptance and contentment with the divine decree. It urges us to have faith in Allah's wisdom and to avoid falling into the trap of resentment or anger when faced with challenging circumstances. By embracing the divine decree, we can find peace and tranquility in our hearts, knowing that everything that happens is ultimately for our own good.

Displeasure with the divine decree can have detrimental effects on our spiritual well-being. It can lead to bitterness, resentment, and a lack of trust in Allah's plan. This negativity can hinder our ability to grow and develop as individuals, as we become consumed by our own desires and frustrations. On the other hand, accepting the divine decree allows us to surrender our will to Allah's, recognizing that He knows what is best for us.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to embrace the divine decree and avoid displeasure with it. It encourages us to trust in Allah's wisdom and accept His plan with patience and gratitude. By doing so, we can attain inner peace and strengthen our relationship with Allah. May Allah guide us all to accept His decree and grant us the strength to face life's challenges with patience and faith.
