Hadith #3643

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the transient nature of this world and the challenges it presents. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the important words used in this Hadith.

The word (dunya) "دُنْيَا" refers to the temporal world, the material realm in which we currently reside. It is a world that is characterized by constant change and movement. The word (tahawwul) "تَحَوُّلِ" means rapid transformation or alteration. This signifies that the world we live in is ever-changing, and nothing remains constant.

The word (tanaqqul) "تَنَقُّلِ" means frequent movement or shifting. It implies that the world is in a constant state of flux, with people and circumstances constantly shifting and changing. This highlights the impermanence of worldly affairs and the need for adaptability.

The word (ghadr) "غَدْرِ" refers to treachery or deceit. It signifies the deceptive nature of the world, where people may betray or deceive others for personal gain. This reminds us to be cautious and not to place our trust blindly in worldly matters.

The word (makr) "مَكْرِ" means craftiness or cunning. It indicates the subtle and deceptive tactics employed by individuals in this world. People may use their intelligence and cunning to achieve their goals, even if it means deceiving others. This serves as a reminder to be vigilant and discerning in our interactions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further describes the world by stating that its situations are abruptly altered, its bounties change, its comfort is insufficient, its pleasures become bitter, its seeker is humiliated, and its rider stumbles. These descriptions emphasize the transient and unsatisfying nature of worldly pursuits.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the teachings of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20) that

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children.

This verse highlights the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and the distractions they provide.

In Surah Al-Imran (3:185), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.

This verse reminds us that the true reward and fulfillment lie in the hereafter, and the pleasures of this world are merely illusory.

The consequences of being attached to the transient nature of this world can be detrimental to our spiritual well-being. When we become too engrossed in worldly pursuits, we may lose sight of our ultimate purpose and neglect our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This can lead to a spiritual decline and a loss of focus on the eternal life to come.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded to prioritize our spiritual growth and seek contentment in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). We should strive to detach ourselves from the materialistic aspects of this world and focus on the everlasting rewards of the hereafter.
