إنَّ فِي الشَّرِّ لَوَقاحَةً۔
Verily in evil there is impudence.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Evil And The Wicked)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إنَّ فِي الشَّرِّ لَوَقاحَةً۔
which translates to
Verily in evil there is impudence.
This profound statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights an important aspect of human nature and the consequences of engaging in evil actions.
To fully understand the meaning of this Hadith, let us delve into the key words used. The word (sharr) "شَّرِّ" refers to evil or harm, encompassing all actions, intentions, and behaviors that are morally wrong and detrimental to oneself and others. It includes acts of injustice, oppression, dishonesty, and immorality. The word (lawqahatan) "لَوَقاحَةً" can be translated as impudence, audacity, or shamelessness. It signifies the boldness and lack of restraint that is often associated with engaging in evil deeds.
This Hadith resonates with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the consequences of evil actions and the importance of restraining oneself from engaging in them. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:81),
And say: 'Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.'
This verse highlights the transient nature of falsehood and evil, indicating that their consequences are ultimately futile and will lead to disgrace and humiliation.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:267), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against the consequences of engaging in evil actions, stating,
O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.
This verse highlights the importance of engaging in righteous actions and refraining from indulging in evil, as it leads to a depletion of one's own blessings and a loss of integrity.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the inherent audacity and shamelessness that is embedded within evil actions. When one engages in evil, they often exhibit a lack of remorse or consideration for the consequences of their actions. This audacity stems from a disregard for moral values and a deviation from the path of righteousness.
The consequences of such audacity are manifold. Firstly, it leads to a deterioration of one's character and spiritual well-being. Engaging in evil actions erodes one's conscience and distances them from the teachings of Islam. Secondly, it creates a negative ripple effect in society, as evil actions have the potential to harm others and disrupt the harmony and peace within communities. Lastly, it distances individuals from the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as evil deeds are a barrier between the servant and their Lord.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of upholding moral values and striving to avoid evil actions. It serves as a call to self-reflection and self-restraint, urging individuals to constantly evaluate their intentions and actions. By doing so, Muslims can strive towards righteousness and protect themselves from the audacity and shamelessness that is inherent in evil.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the path of righteousness and protect us from the audacity of evil. May we always strive to be conscious of our actions and seek His forgiveness and mercy.
