Hadith #2252

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لايُوجَدُ الحَسُودُ مَسْرُوراً۔" This Hadith highlights the negative consequences of jealousy, stating that the jealous person will never find true happiness. To understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the important words and concepts it entails.

The word (hasud) "حَسُودُ" refers to a person who feels envy or jealousy towards others. Envy is a destructive emotion that arises when one desires what others possess, whether it be material possessions, talents, or blessings. It is a feeling of discontent and resentment towards the success or good fortune of others. The word (masrooran) "مَسْرُوراً" means happy or content. Therefore, this Hadith emphasizes that the jealous person will never experience true happiness or contentment.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the destructive nature of jealousy and its consequences. In Surah Al-Nisa (4:54), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against envy and its detrimental effects:

Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them of His bounty? But we had already given the family of Abraham the Scripture and wisdom and conferred upon them a great kingdom.

This verse reminds us that envy stems from a lack of gratitude for the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Jealousy blinds us to our own blessings and causes us to focus on what others have, leading to discontentment and unhappiness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Falaq (113:5), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs us to seek refuge from the evil of the envious person:

From the evil of an envier when he envies.

This verse highlights the negative energy and harm that emanates from a jealous person. Envy not only affects the individual harboring such feelings but also has the potential to harm others. It creates a toxic environment filled with negativity and ill-will.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to guard against jealousy and envy. It teaches us that true happiness and contentment can only be attained by appreciating and being grateful for our own blessings, rather than focusing on what others possess. Jealousy is a self-destructive emotion that hinders personal growth, damages relationships, and prevents one from experiencing true joy.

Let us reflect upon the consequences of jealousy in our own lives. When we envy others, we waste precious time and energy that could be better utilized in self-improvement and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Jealousy breeds negativity and resentment, leading to a toxic mindset that prevents us from appreciating our own blessings. It also damages relationships, as jealousy can create feelings of animosity and competition among individuals.

To overcome jealousy, we must cultivate gratitude and contentment within ourselves. We should recognize that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has blessed each of us with unique gifts and talents. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should focus on utilizing our own abilities to the best of our abilities. By doing so, we can find true happiness and fulfillment in our own accomplishments, without being burdened by envy.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to guard against jealousy and envy. It highlights the destructive nature of these emotions and emphasizes that true happiness can only be attained by appreciating our own blessings and avoiding comparison with others.
