Do not associate with the king in times of disturbance and upheaval, for indeed the sea is such that even when it is calm, the seafarer barely manages to remain safe in it, so how would he fare with its turbulent winds and the tumultuous waves?!

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Kings And Rulers)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to exercise caution and wisdom when dealing with those in positions of power, particularly during times of turmoil and uncertainty. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to associate ourselves with rulers or leaders during such challenging times, drawing a powerful analogy to the unpredictable nature of the sea.

Let us delve into the important words used in this Hadith. The word (sultan) "سُلْطانِ" refers to the ruler or the king, someone who holds authority and power. (idtirab) "اضْطِرابِ" translates to disturbance or upheaval, indicating a state of chaos and instability. (al-umur) "الأُمُورِ" refers to matters or affairs, encompassing various aspects of life. (al-bahr) "البَحْرَ" signifies the sea, while (rakibuhu) "راكِبُهُ" refers to the seafarer or the one who rides the sea. (sukunihi) "سُكُونِهِ" denotes calmness or tranquility, and (ikhtilaf riyaahihi wa idtirab amwajihi)

اخْتِلافِ رياحهِ واضْطِرابِ أمْواجِهِ

refers to the turbulent winds and tumultuous waves of the sea.

To further understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 120:

Never will the Jews or the Christians be satisfied with you until you follow their religion.

This verse highlights the importance of maintaining one's own identity and principles, even in the face of pressure from those in power. Associating with rulers during times of upheaval may lead to compromising one's beliefs and values, as they may expect loyalty and conformity.

In Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 51, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us:

O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.

This verse emphasizes the importance of being cautious and selective in our associations, especially during times of turmoil. It serves as a reminder that aligning oneself with those who may not share the same values and principles can lead to compromising one's faith.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) analogy of the sea further illustrates the potential dangers of associating with rulers during times of upheaval. Even when the sea appears calm, it remains unpredictable and treacherous. Similarly, rulers during times of turmoil may present a facade of stability, but their true nature and intentions may be concealed. By associating with them, one exposes themselves to the risks and uncertainties that come with such alliances.

The consequences of disregarding Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice can be seen throughout history. Many individuals who aligned themselves with rulers during times of turmoil ended up compromising their principles and losing their integrity. Their association with power often led to their downfall, as they became entangled in the web of corruption and oppression.

Reflecting upon this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of maintaining our principles and values, even in the face of adversity. We should exercise caution and wisdom when dealing with those in positions of power, particularly during times of turmoil. By remaining steadfast in our faith and avoiding compromising alliances, we can navigate through the storms of life with integrity and righteousness.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a timeless reminder for Muslims to exercise caution and wisdom when dealing with rulers during times of upheaval. By drawing an analogy to the unpredictable nature of the sea, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the potential dangers of associating with power during turbulent times. Through the guidance of the Quran and the wisdom of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded to remain steadfast in our faith and to prioritize our principles and values above all else. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate through the challenges of life with strength and integrity.
