عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ عَرَفَ سُوءَ عَواقِبِ اللَّذّاتِ كَيْفَ لايَعِفُّ؟!
I am amazed at the one who knows the evil consequences of [forbidden] pleasures, how can he not remain chaste?!
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Chastity)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) expresses his astonishment at those who are aware of the negative consequences of indulging in forbidden pleasures, yet still fail to exercise self-restraint and remain chaste. Let us delve deeper into the words of this hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The key word in this hadith is (arafa) "عَرَفَ", which means to know or to be aware of something. It signifies a deep understanding and recognition of the consequences that follow certain actions. The Imam (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of this awareness, as it should naturally lead to a sense of caution and self-control.
To further understand the significance of this hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-restraint and avoiding forbidden pleasures. In Surah Al-Isra, verse 32, Allah says,
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse clearly warns against indulging in illicit sexual relations and highlights the evil nature of such actions.
Another verse that supports the message of this hadith is found in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 7, where Allah says,
And what Allah restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns - it is for Allah and for the Messenger and for [his] near relatives and orphans and the [stranded] traveler - so that it will not be a perpetual distribution among the rich from among you. And whatever the Messenger has given you - take; and what he has forbidden you - refrain from. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is severe in penalty.
This verse emphasizes the importance of following the guidance of the Prophet (ﷺ) and refraining from what he has forbidden. It serves as a reminder that indulging in forbidden pleasures not only goes against the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ), but also carries severe consequences.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is amazed at those who possess knowledge of the negative consequences of indulging in forbidden pleasures, yet fail to exercise self-restraint. This amazement stems from the fact that knowledge should naturally lead to action. When one truly understands the consequences of their actions, it should motivate them to refrain from engaging in sinful behavior.
The Imam's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) amazement also highlights the importance of knowledge and its role in shaping our actions. Islam places great emphasis on seeking knowledge and understanding the teachings of the Quran and the Prophet (ﷺ). This hadith serves as a reminder that knowledge without action is incomplete and ineffective.
Furthermore, this hadith encourages Muslims to reflect upon their own actions and motivations. It prompts us to question ourselves: Are we truly aware of the consequences of our actions? Do we exercise self-restraint and remain chaste in the face of temptation? It serves as a call to constantly evaluate our choices and strive for self-improvement.
In conclusion, this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of knowledge, self-restraint, and the consequences of indulging in forbidden pleasures. It serves as a reminder for Muslims to reflect upon their actions and motivations, and to strive for righteousness in all aspects of their lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to remain chaste and to always seek His pleasure.
