لايَدْهَشُ عِنْدَ البَلاءِ اَلحازِمُ۔
The judicious one does not become perplexed in times of adversity.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Judicious)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The judicious one does not become perplexed in times of adversity.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word (layadhashu) "لايَدْهَشُ" in the Hadith refers to the state of being perplexed or astonished. It signifies a state of confusion or bewilderment that arises when faced with difficulties or hardships. On the other hand, the word (al-bala') "البَلاءِ" refers to adversity or trials that one encounters in life.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining composure and steadfastness in the face of challenges. It teaches us that a person of wisdom and understanding does not allow themselves to be overwhelmed or disheartened by the trials they face. Instead, they remain firm and composed, relying on their knowledge and faith to navigate through the hardships.
The Quran provides us with numerous examples and teachings that support this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155),
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse reminds us that trials and tribulations are a part of life, and it is through patience and perseverance that we can overcome them.
In Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse highlights the inevitability of trials in the life of a believer. It serves as a reminder that adversity is a test from Allah, and it is our response to these tests that determines our character and faith.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, exemplified the teachings of this Hadith throughout his life. He faced numerous challenges and adversities, yet he remained steadfast and resolute in his faith. His unwavering commitment to righteousness and justice, even in the face of immense opposition, serves as an inspiration for Muslims of all generations.
When we encounter difficulties in our lives, whether they be personal, social, or spiritual, we should remember the guidance of this Hadith. Rather than allowing ourselves to be overwhelmed by the adversities, we should strive to maintain a calm and composed demeanor. We should seek solace in the teachings of the Quran and the examples set by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt.
By embodying the qualities of patience, perseverance, and reliance on Allah, we can navigate through the trials of life with grace and dignity. We should remember that every difficulty we face is an opportunity for growth and purification of the soul. It is through these challenges that we can strengthen our faith and draw closer to Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of remaining composed and steadfast in times of adversity. It reminds us that a person of wisdom does not allow themselves to be perplexed or disheartened by the trials they face.
