Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "بِالإحْسانِ تُسْتَرَقُّ الرِّقابُ۔" This can be translated as,

Through kindness, people are enthralled.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (ihsan) "إحسان" in this Hadith refers to acts of kindness, goodness, and excellence. It encompasses going above and beyond in one's actions, treating others with compassion, and striving for the betterment of society. It is a comprehensive term that embodies moral excellence and virtuous conduct.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of kindness and good treatment towards others in numerous verses. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 83,

And [recall] when We took the covenant from the Children of Israel, [enjoining upon them], 'Do not worship except Allah; and to parents do good and to relatives, orphans, and the needy. And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.' Then you turned away, except a few of you, and you were refusing.

This verse highlights the importance of doing good to others, including parents, relatives, orphans, and the needy. It emphasizes the significance of speaking kind words and maintaining good relationships with people. By doing so, we fulfill our obligations towards Allah and His creation.

Another verse that supports the Hadith is found in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 8, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice and fairness in our interactions with others. It encourages us to be witnesses for the truth, even if it goes against our own interests or those of our loved ones. This requires us to be kind and just, treating others with respect and dignity.

Now, let us reflect on the beautiful message of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith. Through acts of kindness, people are not only influenced but also inspired to reciprocate that kindness. When we treat others with compassion, empathy, and generosity, we create an environment of love and harmony. Our actions have the power to touch the hearts of others and motivate them to emulate our behavior.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His actions and teachings exemplified the concept of ihsan. He treated people with utmost kindness and fairness, even in the most challenging circumstances. His generosity and compassion were not limited to his family or companions but extended to all members of society.

By practicing ihsan, we can transform our relationships and society as a whole. Kindness has a ripple effect, spreading positivity and goodness. When we show kindness to others, we create a bond of love and trust. This, in turn, fosters unity and cooperation among individuals and communities.

Moreover, acts of kindness have far-reaching consequences. They not only benefit the recipient but also have a profound impact on the doer. Engaging in acts of ihsan purifies our souls, strengthens our faith, and brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a means of seeking His pleasure and attaining His mercy.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of kindness in our interactions with others. Through acts of ihsan, we have the power to influence and inspire people. The Quranic verses mentioned emphasize the significance of treating others with goodness, justice, and fairness. Let us strive to embody the spirit of ihsan in our daily lives, spreading kindness and compassion to all Muslims and beyond. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to be people of ihsan and bless us with His mercy and forgiveness.
