(Ghurar al-Hikam: Piety)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لاصِيانَةَ لِمَنْ لاوَرَعَ لَهُ۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of piety and righteousness in safeguarding oneself. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (safeguard) "صِيانَةَ" in this Hadith refers to protection or preservation. It implies the act of safeguarding oneself from harm or danger. The word (no) "لَا" negates the existence of this safeguard. Therefore, the Hadith conveys that without (piety) "وَرَعَ", one cannot attain true protection or preservation.

The term (piety) "وَرَعَ" refers to a state of consciousness and awareness of Allah's commands and prohibitions. It encompasses fear of Allah, adherence to His guidance, and refraining from sins. Piety is the foundation upon which a believer builds their character and actions.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the significance of piety. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:102)

O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him].

This verse highlights the importance of fearing Allah and living a life of piety.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 49:13)

Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you.

This verse emphasizes that true nobility and honor lie in righteousness and piety.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that true protection and preservation can only be attained through piety. Without piety, one is vulnerable to the harms and temptations of this world. Piety acts as a shield, guarding us against the evils of society and our own desires.

When a person possesses piety, they are motivated to adhere to the teachings of Islam and avoid sinful actions. They are conscious of their words, deeds, and intentions, ensuring that they align with the principles of righteousness. Piety brings about a sense of accountability and responsibility towards Allah and fellow human beings.

Moreover, piety has profound consequences on an individual's spiritual, emotional, and social well-being. It fosters a sense of inner peace, contentment, and tranquility. It strengthens the relationship between the individual and Allah, leading to increased blessings and guidance in their life.

Piety also has a transformative effect on society. When individuals strive for piety, they contribute to the creation of a just and harmonious community. They uphold moral values, promote justice, and work towards the betterment of society. Their actions inspire others to follow the path of righteousness, creating a ripple effect of positive change.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we must strive to cultivate piety in our lives. We should constantly evaluate our actions and intentions, seeking to align them with the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we can attain true protection and preservation, both in this world and the hereafter.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to embody piety in all aspects of our lives. May He protect us from the harms and temptations of this world and grant us success in the hereafter. Ameen.
