Hadith #667

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of choosing our companions wisely. The word (salamah) "سَلَامَةَ" in the Hadith refers to safety, security, and well-being. It encompasses both physical and spiritual aspects of our lives. To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of surrounding ourselves with righteous and knowledgeable individuals. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah says, (Quran 18:28)

And keep yourself patient [by being] with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His countenance.

This verse highlights the importance of seeking the company of those who remember and worship Allah regularly. By being in the company of such individuals, we are more likely to be reminded of our purpose in life, encouraged to engage in acts of worship, and guided towards righteousness.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah describes the characteristics of His servants, saying, (Quran 25:63)

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse teaches us to respond to ignorance and foolishness with peace and tranquility. It encourages us to maintain our composure and avoid engaging in arguments or disputes with individuals who lack knowledge. By doing so, we not only protect ourselves from unnecessary conflicts but also uphold the values of patience, tolerance, and kindness.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that our choice of companions can greatly impact our spiritual and moral development. Associating with ignorant individuals can lead us astray, as their lack of knowledge may result in misguided beliefs and actions.
