(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاشِيمَةَ كَالحَياءِ۔" which translates to

There is no [good] trait like modesty.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the significance and virtue of modesty.

The word (hayaa) "حَيَاء" in this Hadith refers to modesty, shyness, or bashfulness. It is a quality that encompasses a sense of humility, decency, and self-respect. Modesty is a characteristic that is highly praised in Islam and is considered to be one of the noblest traits a person can possess.

The importance of modesty is emphasized in the Quran as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),

O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.

This verse highlights the significance of modesty in clothing, as it is a means of preserving one's dignity and protecting oneself from indecency.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs both men and women to lower their gaze and guard their modesty. This verse emphasizes the importance of modesty in behavior and interactions, reminding Muslims to be mindful of their actions and to avoid engaging in inappropriate behavior.

Imam Ali's statement,

There is no [good] trait like modesty,

serves as a reminder to Muslims of the immense value and virtue of this quality. Modesty is not limited to one's appearance or clothing, but it extends to one's speech, conduct, and overall demeanor. It is a trait that reflects a person's humility, self-restraint, and respect for oneself and others.

Modesty has numerous benefits and consequences in a person's life. It cultivates a sense of humility and gratitude towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), as it reminds individuals of their dependence on Him and their need for His guidance and mercy. Modesty also fosters a sense of self-awareness and self-discipline, enabling individuals to avoid arrogance, pride, and excessive self-promotion.

Furthermore, modesty plays a crucial role in maintaining healthy and respectful relationships with others. It promotes a culture of decency, respect, and honor, allowing individuals to interact with others in a dignified and honorable manner. Modesty also serves as a shield against the temptations of the world, protecting individuals from falling into sinful behavior and immoral actions.

Imam Ali's thought-provoking Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of cultivating and nurturing the quality of modesty in their lives. It encourages individuals to strive for humility, self-restraint, and decency in all aspects of their lives. By embodying the trait of modesty, Muslims can uphold the values and principles of Islam, and contribute to the creation of a society that is characterized by righteousness, respect, and honor.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the trait of modesty in our lives and may He bless us with His guidance and mercy.
