— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opportunity And Its Loss)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لاحَسْرَةَ كَالفَوْتِ۔" This can be translated as,

There is no regret like loss [of an opportunity].

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (hasrah) "حَسْرَةَ" in this Hadith refers to a deep sense of regret and sorrow that one experiences upon losing something valuable or missing out on an opportunity. It is a feeling of disappointment and remorse that arises from realizing the consequences of a missed chance. The word (fawt) "فَوْتِ" means loss or deprivation, emphasizing the magnitude of the regret.

This Hadith reminds us of the importance of seizing opportunities and making the most of them. It serves as a powerful motivation to actively pursue beneficial endeavors and not let valuable chances slip away. To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance.

In Surah Al-Hashr (59:18), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, fear Allah. And let every soul look to what it has put forth for tomorrow - and fear Allah. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.

This verse highlights the importance of being mindful of our actions and their consequences. It urges us to reflect on our deeds and make the most of our time in this world, as we will be held accountable for our choices.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Mumtahanah (60:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, do not take My enemies and your enemies as allies, extending to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth.

This verse reminds us not to miss the opportunity to distinguish between those who are true allies and those who oppose the truth. It emphasizes the importance of aligning ourselves with those who uphold the principles of faith and righteousness.

Reflecting on these verses, we can understand the profound wisdom behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. The Hadith serves as a reminder that opportunities in life are precious and should not be squandered. It urges us to seize the chance to perform good deeds, seek knowledge, and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can avoid the deep regret and sorrow that accompanies the loss of valuable opportunities.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, understood the importance of making the most of every opportunity. His life serves as a shining example of someone who embraced every chance to serve Allah and benefit humanity. He was a paragon of knowledge, justice, and piety, and his teachings continue to inspire Muslims of all generations.

As Muslims, we should reflect on this Hadith and strive to live our lives with purpose and intention. We should seize every opportunity to seek knowledge, perform good deeds, and strengthen our relationship with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By doing so, we can avoid the regret and sorrow that comes from missed chances and instead experience the fulfillment and contentment that arise from making the most of every moment.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to recognize and seize valuable opportunities, and may He bless us with the ability to make the most of our time in this world. Ameen.
