لاتَكُونُوا لِفَضْلِ اللّهِ عَلَيْكُمْ حُسّاداً۔
Because of the favour of Allah upon you, do not be jealous.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Jealous)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims to avoid feelings of jealousy and envy towards one another. The Arabic word (husada) "حُسّاداً" used in this Hadith refers to those who harbor jealousy and envy in their hearts. It is important to understand the significance of this word in order to fully grasp the message conveyed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ).
Jealousy is a destructive emotion that can lead to animosity, hatred, and division within the Muslim community. It stems from a lack of contentment with the blessings and favors bestowed upon others by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Instead of appreciating the blessings of others and being grateful for our own, jealousy causes us to desire what others have and feel resentful towards them.
To emphasize the importance of avoiding jealousy, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Nisa, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 4:32)
And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of his bounty. Indeed Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has distributed His blessings and provisions among His creation according to His wisdom. Each individual has been granted a unique portion of blessings, whether it be wealth, knowledge, beauty, or any other form of favor. It is not for us to envy or resent others for what they have been given, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate bestower and distributor of blessings.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.
This verse reminds us that the worldly possessions and achievements that we may be jealous of are temporary and fleeting. They hold no true value in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Our focus should be on seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and striving for success in the hereafter, rather than being consumed by jealousy and envy in this temporary world.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, advises us to refrain from jealousy because it not only harms our relationships with others but also hinders our own spiritual growth. Jealousy breeds negative feelings and actions, such as backbiting, slander, and ill-wishing towards others. It creates a toxic environment within the Muslim community, eroding trust and unity.
By avoiding jealousy, we can foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims, where we genuinely rejoice in the blessings and successes of others. This not only strengthens our relationships but also allows us to focus on our own personal growth and development. We can channel our energy towards self-improvement, seeking knowledge, and performing good deeds, rather than being consumed by negative emotions.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid jealousy and envy. Through the guidance of the Quran, we are reminded of the importance of contentment, gratitude, and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By refraining from jealousy, we can foster unity, strengthen our relationships, and focus on our own spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) protect us from the destructive effects of jealousy and grant us the ability to sincerely rejoice in the blessings of others.
