(Ghurar al-Hikam: Stinginess And Avarice)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لا مَسَبَّةَ كالشُّحِّ۔" This can be translated into English as,

There is no vilification like avarice.

In this enlightening Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the destructive nature of greed and the harm it brings to individuals and society.

To fully comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. "Masabah" refers to vilification or defamation, while "shuh" denotes avarice or greed. Vilification encompasses any form of verbal or non-verbal attack that tarnishes the reputation or honor of an individual. Avarice, on the other hand, is an insatiable desire for wealth or possessions, often leading to unethical and harmful actions.

The Quran provides us with numerous verses that shed light on the detrimental consequences of greed and the importance of contentment. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 96,

And you will surely find them the most greedy of people for life - [even] more than those who associate others with Allah.

This verse emphasizes the excessive desire for worldly gains that can lead individuals astray from the path of righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra, verse 80, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And We have certainly created man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh; then We developed him into another creation. So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.

This verse highlights the miraculous creation of human beings and reminds us of the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It serves as a reminder that our purpose in life is not solely focused on accumulating wealth, but rather on fulfilling our responsibilities and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) draws our attention to the fact that avarice is a form of vilification. When a person becomes consumed by greed, they not only harm themselves but also engage in actions that harm others. Greed can lead to dishonesty, exploitation, and the neglect of one's moral obligations. It blinds individuals to the needs of others and fosters an environment of injustice and inequality.

Moreover, avarice can have severe consequences on one's spiritual well-being. It distracts individuals from their true purpose in life, which is to seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and to serve humanity. The pursuit of material possessions becomes a barrier between individuals and their spiritual growth. It hinders their ability to develop qualities such as generosity, compassion, and selflessness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the dangers of avarice. He encourages us to reflect on our intentions and to strive for contentment. By cultivating a mindset of gratitude and detachment from worldly possessions, we can free ourselves from the shackles of greed and focus on the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to avoid the destructive path of avarice. It draws our attention to the harmful consequences of greed and the importance of contentment. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that highlight the dangers of excessive desire for wealth, we are reminded of the true purpose of our existence and the need to prioritize our spiritual growth over material gains. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to the path of righteousness and protect us from the pitfalls of avarice.
