لِكُلِّ جَمْع فُرْقَةٌ۔
For every gathering there is separation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Separation And Isolation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لِكُلِّ جَمْع فُرْقَةٌ۔" which translates to
For every gathering there is separation.
This amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights a universal truth that applies to all aspects of life.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us first examine the key words. The word (jam') "جَمْع" means gathering or congregation, while (furqah) "فُرْقَةٌ" refers to separation or division. These words convey the idea that whenever people come together, whether it be in social gatherings, communities, or even families, there will inevitably be moments of separation and division.
This concept is not only reflected in the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), but it is also supported by various verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:59),
And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record.
This verse emphasizes the divine knowledge and control of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) over every aspect of creation, including the gatherings and separations of people. It reminds us that even the smallest details of our lives are known to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and He has ordained these moments of separation as part of His divine plan.
Another verse that sheds light on this Hadith is found in Surah Al-Anfal (8:30), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And [remember, O Muhammad], when those who disbelieved plotted against you to restrain you or kill you or evict you [from Makkah]. But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners.
This verse illustrates that even in the face of adversity and opposition, Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) plan prevails. It shows that gatherings may be disrupted or separated due to the plans of those who oppose the truth, but ultimately, Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) plan is the one that prevails.
Now, let us reflect on the significance behind Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement. This Hadith serves as a reminder that life is transient and ever-changing. Just as gatherings are formed, they are also destined to disperse. It teaches us to appreciate the moments of togetherness and unity, for they are temporary and fleeting.
Moreover, this Hadith teaches us to be prepared for the inevitable moments of separation and division. It reminds us that disagreements and conflicts are a natural part of human interactions. However, it is our responsibility as Muslims to strive for unity and reconciliation, even in the face of differences.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, shared this Hadith to guide Muslims in navigating the complexities of life. He wanted us to understand that while gatherings may bring people together, it is our ability to maintain unity and harmony amidst the challenges of separation that truly defines our character as believers.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)
For every gathering there is separation
serves as a reminder of the transient nature of life and the importance of unity in the face of division. It encourages us to appreciate the moments of togetherness, while also preparing us for the challenges of separation. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate these moments with grace and strengthen our bonds as a Muslim ummah.
