(Ghurar al-Hikam: Obedience And Compliance)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ يُطِعِ اللّهَ يَفُزْ۔

This can be translated as,

One who obeys his Lord gains success.

Let us delve into the significance of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (yutiʿi) "يُطِعِ" in Arabic means to obey, comply, or submit. It signifies a complete and sincere surrender to the commands of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It implies not only following the obligatory acts of worship but also adhering to the teachings of Islam in all aspects of life. This obedience is not merely outward compliance, but it stems from a deep-rooted faith and love for Allah.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of obedience in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 4:59)

O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you should believe in Allah and the Last Day. That is the best [way] and best in result

This verse highlights the significance of obeying not only Allah and His Messenger but also those in authority who uphold justice and righteousness.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Imran, Allah states, (Quran 4:69)

And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger - those will be with the ones upon whom Allah has bestowed favor of the prophets, the steadfast affirmers of truth, the martyrs and the righteous. And excellent are those as companions

This verse emphasizes that those who obey Allah and His Messenger will be rewarded with the company of the righteous and the blessed.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true success lies in obedience to Allah. When we submit ourselves to the will of Allah and follow His guidance, we attain true prosperity and felicity in this world and the Hereafter. This success is not limited to material gains or worldly achievements but encompasses spiritual tranquility, inner peace, and eternal bliss.

Obedience to Allah entails following His commandments, avoiding His prohibitions, and striving to embody the noble qualities and values prescribed by Islam. It involves fulfilling our obligations towards Allah, such as performing the five daily prayers, fasting in Ramadan, giving charity, and performing Hajj if we are able. It also encompasses fulfilling our responsibilities towards others, such as being kind, just, and compassionate in our interactions, and upholding the principles of social justice and equality.

When we obey Allah sincerely, we align ourselves with the divine wisdom and guidance. This obedience brings us closer to Allah and strengthens our relationship with Him. It protects us from the pitfalls of sin and wrongdoing, and it shields us from the harmful consequences of disobedience. Obedience to Allah also instills in us a sense of purpose, direction, and moral clarity, enabling us to navigate the challenges and trials of life with wisdom and resilience.

Moreover, obedience to Allah is not a burden or a restriction; rather, it is a means of attaining true freedom and liberation. By submitting to the will of Allah, we free ourselves from the shackles of our desires, ego, and societal pressures. We become liberated from the chains of materialism, greed, and worldly attachments. This liberation allows us to live a life of contentment, gratitude, and spiritual fulfillment.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that true success lies in obeying our Lord, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This obedience encompasses all aspects of our lives and is rooted in a deep faith and love for Allah. By obeying Allah, we attain prosperity, tranquility, and eternal bliss. May Allah grant us the ability to obey Him wholeheartedly and may He bless us with success in this world and the Hereafter.
