لَيْسَ فِي المَعاصي أشَدُّ مِنْ اِتِّباعِ الشَّهْوَةِ فَلا تُطيعُوها فَيَشْغَلَكُمْ عَنِ اللّهِ۔
There is no sin that is worse than following [one’s] lust, so do not obey it as it will preoccupy you from [the remembrance of] Allah.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the grave consequences of succumbing to one's desires and urges. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
There is no sin that is worse than following [one’s] lust, so do not obey it as it will preoccupy you from [the remembrance of] Allah.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (ma'asi) "مَعاصي" refers to sins or acts of disobedience. It encompasses all actions that go against the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The word (shahwah) "شَهْوَةِ" refers to desires or lusts, specifically those that are base and carnal in nature. It represents the inclination towards fulfilling one's physical and worldly desires.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us that following our lusts is the worst form of sin. This is because it leads us away from the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and diverts our attention from our ultimate purpose in life. Our desires can cloud our judgment and distract us from fulfilling our obligations towards Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and our fellow human beings.
To further understand the gravity of this sin, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Yusuf (12:53),
And I do not acquit myself. Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy. Indeed, my Lord is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse emphasizes the inherent inclination of the human soul towards evil and desires. It is a constant struggle to resist these temptations and seek the mercy and forgiveness of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah?
This verse highlights the misguided nature of those who prioritize their desires over the guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Such individuals are led astray and lose sight of the true path.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions us against obeying our lusts, as they have the potential to consume us and divert our attention from the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we prioritize our desires over our spiritual obligations, we become slaves to our own whims and lose sight of our purpose in this world.
The consequences of following our lusts are far-reaching. It can lead to the neglect of our prayers, the abandonment of our moral values, and the indulgence in sinful behaviors. Our desires can blind us to the consequences of our actions and prevent us from seeking forgiveness and repentance. Ultimately, it distances us from the mercy and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-control and the need to prioritize our spiritual well-being over our worldly desires. We must strive to align our actions with the commandments of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the teachings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can protect ourselves from the detrimental consequences of following our lusts and ensure our focus remains on the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength to resist our base desires and seek His pleasure in all aspects of our lives. May He guide us on the straight path and protect us from the temptations that lead us astray. Ameen.
