(Ghurar al-Hikam: Question And Answer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to refrain from being offensive in their speech, as it may lead to receiving a rude response in return. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (la tusi'i) "لا تُسِئِِ" in the Hadith means

do not be offensive

or "do not insult." It emphasizes the importance of maintaining good manners and avoiding harsh and hurtful words in our interactions with others. This teaching aligns with the Quranic guidance that encourages believers to speak kindly and respectfully to one another.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:53),

Tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse highlights the importance of choosing our words wisely and speaking in the best possible manner. By doing so, we can avoid causing harm and discord among people.

Furthermore, the Hadith mentions the consequence of offensive speech, which is being offended by the rudeness of the reply. This implies that when we speak offensively, we should not be surprised if we receive a harsh response in return. Our words have the power to either build bridges or create divisions, and it is crucial to understand the impact they can have on our relationships.

In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises us,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames.

This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from insulting others and using derogatory language. It reminds us that we should not belittle or mock others, as they may be better than us in the sight of Allah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their speech and to always strive for kindness and respect in their interactions. By doing so, we can foster a harmonious and peaceful society, where individuals feel valued and respected.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of avoiding offensive speech and treating others with kindness and respect. It reminds us that our words have consequences and that we should strive to be mindful of the impact they can have on our relationships. By following this guidance, we can contribute to a more compassionate and harmonious society, in line with the teachings of the Quran. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to speak with wisdom and kindness, and may He grant us the ability to embody the noble qualities of our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt.
