Hadith #5096

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The attractiveness of evil is avarice.

Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding.

Firstly, (jamal) "جَمالُ" refers to beauty or attractiveness. It signifies something that captivates and allures. In this context, it refers to the allure of evil, which can be enticing and appealing to our desires. However, it is crucial to remember that this beauty is deceptive and temporary, leading to detrimental consequences.

Secondly, (ash-sharr) "الشَّرِّ" means evil or wickedness. It encompasses all actions, thoughts, and intentions that go against the teachings of Islam and lead to harm and corruption. Evil can manifest in various forms, such as lying, cheating, backbiting, and indulging in forbidden desires.

Lastly, (at-tama') "الطَّمَعُ" translates to avarice or greed. It signifies an insatiable desire for wealth, power, or material possessions. Avarice blinds individuals, making them prioritize their own interests over the well-being of others. It leads to unethical behavior, exploitation, and an imbalance in society.

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us about the allure of evil and the consequences it brings. In Surah Al-Hadid (57:20), Allah says,

Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.

This verse reminds us that the attractions of this world are temporary and fleeting. Wealth, power, and material possessions may seem appealing, but they do not bring lasting happiness or fulfillment. They are like a beautiful plant that withers away, leaving behind nothing but debris.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:14-15), Allah describes the consequences of avarice and greed, saying,

No! Rather, the stain has covered their hearts of that which they were earning. No! Indeed, from their Lord, that Day, they will be partitioned.

These verses highlight the spiritual and moral consequences of avarice. When individuals become consumed by greed, their hearts become stained with impurity, distancing them from the mercy and guidance of Allah. On the Day of Judgment, they will be separated from the righteous and held accountable for their actions.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, warns us about the attractiveness of evil and avarice. He reminds us that evil may appear appealing, but it is a trap that leads to destruction and spiritual decay. Avarice blinds us to the true purpose of life, which is to seek the pleasure of Allah and strive for the betterment of ourselves and society.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we must be vigilant and cautious of the allure of evil. We should strive to purify our hearts from greed and avarice, seeking contentment in the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah. By focusing on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter and practicing selflessness, we can protect ourselves from the deceptive beauty of evil and lead a righteous and fulfilling life.

May Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to recognize the true nature of evil and protect us from its temptations. May He grant us the wisdom and strength to overcome avarice and cultivate generosity and righteousness in our hearts. Ameen.
