— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Anger)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to refrain from hastiness in getting angry, as it can lead to the development of an uncontrollable habit. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.

The key word in this Hadith is (al-ghadab) "الغَضَبِ", which translates to "anger." Anger is a natural emotion that arises in response to perceived injustice or wrongdoing. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) cautions us against being quick to anger, as it can have detrimental effects on our character and relationships.

The Imam's advice aligns with the teachings of the Quran, which repeatedly emphasizes the importance of controlling one's anger. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the righteous as those who (Quran 3:134)

spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people

This verse highlights the virtues of patience and forgiveness, which are essential in managing anger.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) praises the servants of the Most Merciful as those who (Quran 25:63)

walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace

This verse teaches us the importance of responding to provocation with calmness and peace, rather than succumbing to anger.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to avoid developing an uncontrollable habit of anger is significant. When we allow anger to become a habitual response, it can lead to negative consequences in various aspects of our lives. It can strain relationships, hinder effective communication, and cloud our judgment. Moreover, it can distance us from the path of righteousness and prevent us from embodying the qualities of mercy and forgiveness that Islam encourages.

To illustrate the significance of controlling anger, let us reflect on the story of Prophet Moses (Musa) (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in the Quran. When Moses was confronted by the arrogant Pharaoh, he remained patient and composed, despite the immense provocation. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commended Moses for his self-restraint and bestowed upon him great wisdom and guidance. This serves as a powerful example of the rewards that come with controlling anger and responding with patience and wisdom.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of managing our anger and avoiding the development of an uncontrollable habit. By restraining our anger and responding with patience, forgiveness, and peace, we align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the noble examples set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to control our anger and cultivate virtuous qualities in our character.
