Hadith #2288

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes three important principles: conferring favors, fearing Allah, and refraining from cracking silly jokes. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of each principle and explore their significance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

confer favors and you will be thanked.

This means that by showing kindness, generosity, and compassion towards others, we not only benefit them but also earn their gratitude. This principle aligns with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to engage in acts of charity and goodness. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 267, Allah says,

O you who have believed, spend from the good things which you have earned and from that which We have produced for you from the earth. And do not aim toward the defective therefrom, spending [from that] while you would not take it [yourself] except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.

Furthermore, the act of conferring favors not only brings gratitude from others but also earns us rewards from Allah. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 195, Allah says,

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

Secondly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

fear [Allah] and you will be feared [by the people].

This principle highlights the importance of developing a deep sense of consciousness and awe of Allah (تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we fear Allah and strive to follow His commands, we gain respect and admiration from others. This principle is beautifully illustrated in the Quran in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 13, where Allah says,

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

By fearing Allah and adhering to His guidance, we become role models for others, inspiring them to follow the path of righteousness. Our actions and character become a reflection of our faith, and people naturally develop a sense of respect and admiration towards us.

Lastly, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to

refrain from cracking silly jokes such that you are belittled.

This principle reminds us to be mindful of our words and actions, ensuring that they align with the teachings of Islam. Silly jokes or inappropriate humor can lead to the belittlement of oneself and others. The Quran emphasizes the importance of speaking with wisdom and avoiding idle talk. In Surah Al-Mu'minun, verse 3, Allah says,

And who turn away from ill speech.

Cracking silly jokes may seem harmless, but they can have negative consequences. They can hurt the feelings of others, undermine their dignity, and create an atmosphere of disrespect. As Muslims, we are encouraged to engage in meaningful and beneficial conversations that promote unity, understanding, and respect.
