إذا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْكَ الشَّهْوَةُ فَاغْلِبْها بِالاِخْتِصارِ۔
When lust tries to overcome you then defeat it by curtailing excesses.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Lust)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (ﷺ) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us on how to combat and overcome our desires and lusts. The key word in this Hadith is (shahwah) "شَهْوَةُ", which refers to strong desires or passions that can lead to indulgence or excess. It encompasses various forms of desires, including physical desires, such as those related to food, drink, and sexual desires, as well as emotional desires, such as anger, jealousy, and greed.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) guides us to defeat these overpowering desires by (iqtisar) "اِخْتِصَارِ", which means curtailing or restraining oneself. This implies that we should exercise self-control and moderation in our actions and behaviors, rather than giving in to our desires without any limits or boundaries.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of self-control and moderation in various aspects of our lives.
In Surah Al-A'raf (7:31), Allah warns us against following our desires blindly, saying,
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
This verse reminds us that while it is permissible to enjoy the blessings of this world, we should not indulge in excessiveness. We should strive to strike a balance between our desires and our responsibilities, ensuring that we do not let our desires control us.
Similarly, in Surah Al-Isra (17:32), Allah advises us,
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse highlights the importance of controlling our sexual desires and refraining from engaging in any form of illicit behavior.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11-12), Allah reminds us of the importance of controlling our anger and not giving in to our negative emotions. He says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.
These verses highlight the need for self-restraint and moderation in our interactions with others, reminding us that indulging in excessive anger or mockery is not befitting of a believer.
Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of these Quranic verses, we understand that it is essential for us as Muslims to exercise self-control and moderation in all aspects of our lives. By curtailing our desires and not allowing them to overpower us, we can maintain a balanced and righteous lifestyle.
Practicing self-control and moderation has numerous benefits. It helps us avoid falling into sinful behavior, maintain good physical and mental health, and develop a strong sense of discipline and resilience. It also enables us to prioritize our obligations and responsibilities, ensuring that we do not neglect our duties towards Allah, ourselves, and others.
Let us strive to follow the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran by curtailing our desires and exercising self-control. By doing so, we can attain spiritual growth, strengthen our character, and ultimately seek the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to overcome our desires and lead a life of moderation and righteousness.
