إذا عاقَبْتَ فَارْفُقْ۔
When you punish, be lenient.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Leniency And Gentleness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "إذا عاقَبْتَ فَارْفُقْ" which translates to
When you punish, be lenient.
This short but profound statement holds great wisdom and guidance for Muslims in dealing with matters of discipline and punishment.
The word (a'aqabta) "عاقَبْتَ" in this Hadith refers to the act of punishing or disciplining someone. It implies taking action against a wrongdoing or an offense committed by an individual. However, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to approach punishment with leniency and gentleness.
This teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) finds support in the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of mercy and forgiveness. Allah says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 109:
Many of the people of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from themselves [even] after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah delivers His command. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.
This verse highlights the virtue of pardoning and overlooking the faults of others, even when they may have wronged us. It encourages Muslims to exercise patience and forgiveness, rather than rushing to punish or seek revenge. This approach promotes harmony and reconciliation within society.
Another verse that supports the teaching of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah An-Nur, verse 22:
And let not those of virtue among you and wealth swear not to give [aid] to their relatives and the needy and the emigrants for the cause of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Would you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.
This verse encourages Muslims to be generous and forgiving towards others, especially those in need. It reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is forgiving and merciful, and He rewards those who show mercy and forgiveness to others. Therefore, when we are in a position to punish or discipline, we should remember the importance of leniency and compassion.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice to be lenient when punishing carries profound implications. It reminds us that punishment should not be driven by anger or a desire for revenge, but rather by a genuine intention to correct and reform. By being lenient, we create an environment that encourages growth and learning, rather than instilling fear and resentment.
When we punish with leniency, we allow room for individuals to reflect on their actions, understand their mistakes, and seek forgiveness. This approach fosters a sense of accountability and responsibility, leading to personal growth and positive change. It also promotes a culture of forgiveness and compassion within our communities, strengthening the bonds of brotherhood and unity.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasis on leniency in punishment is a testament to his profound knowledge and understanding of human nature. He recognized that harsh and excessive punishment often leads to further harm and resentment, while leniency and compassion have the power to heal and transform.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of being lenient when punishing others. This teaching aligns with the Quranic emphasis on mercy, forgiveness, and compassion. By adopting a lenient approach to discipline, we create an environment that promotes growth, learning, and positive change. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to implement this teaching in our lives and enable us to be merciful and forgiving towards others.
