Guard against cold in its (seasonal) beginning and welcome it towards its end because it effects bodies in the same way as it effects plants. In the beginning, it destroys them but in the end it gives them fresh leaves.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be cautious of the cold weather when it first arrives and to embrace it as it nears its end. He compares the effect of cold weather on our bodies to its effect on plants. Just as the cold weather initially destroys plants, causing them to wither, it eventually brings about new life as they sprout fresh leaves.

To understand the deeper meaning of this hadith, let us reflect upon the wisdom and guidance provided by the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) often uses nature and its phenomena as signs and lessons for humanity. In Surah Al-Hajj, verse 5, Allah says, (Quran 22:5)

O People, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then indeed, We created you from dust, then from a sperm-drop, then from a clinging clot, and then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed - that We may show you. And We settle in the wombs whom We will for a specified term, then We bring you out as infants, then [We develop you] that you may reach your [time of] maturity. And among you is he who is taken in [early] death, and among you is he who is returned to the most decrepit [old] age so that he knows, after [once having] knowledge, nothing.

This verse highlights the stages of human development, from conception to birth, and ultimately to old age. It emphasizes the transient nature of life and the inevitability of death. Similarly, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith draws our attention to the cyclical nature of seasons and the constant change that occurs in the natural world.

Just as the cold weather initially brings destruction to plants, it serves as a reminder of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death. It is a call to reflect upon the transient nature of this world and to prepare ourselves for the eternal life that awaits us. The cold weather, like the passing of time, reminds us that everything in this world is temporary and subject to change.

However, as the cold weather nears its end, it brings about a renewal of life in plants. This symbolizes the hope and rejuvenation that can be found even in the face of adversity. It teaches us that just as the plants emerge with fresh leaves, we too can find new beginnings and opportunities for growth after experiencing hardships.

This hadith also serves as a reminder of the importance of being mindful and prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Just as we take precautions to protect ourselves from the cold weather, we should also take precautions to safeguard our spiritual well-being. We should strive to strengthen our faith, increase our knowledge, and engage in acts of worship and good deeds. By doing so, we can fortify ourselves against the trials and tribulations of life and emerge stronger and more resilient, just like the plants that withstand the harshness of winter and flourish in the spring.

In conclusion, this profound hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the transient nature of life and the importance of being prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. It encourages us to embrace the changing seasons of life and to find hope and renewal even in the face of adversity. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the lessons embedded in the natural world and the strength to navigate the trials of life with patience and perseverance.
