Not every fault is manifested.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Flaws And Faults)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

لَيْسَ كُلُّ عَوْرَة تَظْهَرُ۔

This can be translated as,

Not every fault is manifested.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (awrah) "عَوْرَة" refers to a fault, flaw, or imperfection that one possesses. It can also refer to something that is hidden or concealed. The word (tazharu) "تَظْهَرُ" means to become apparent or to be revealed.

In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse highlights the importance of not ridiculing or insulting others, as we may not be aware of their true worth or the hidden virtues they possess. Similarly, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes that not every fault or flaw is visible to the naked eye. Just as we should not judge others based on their external appearances, we should also refrain from making assumptions about their internal faults.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,

O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.

This verse teaches us to avoid making excessive negative assumptions about others, as it can lead to sin. It also highlights the prohibition of backbiting and spying on one another. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us that not every fault is visible, and it is not our place to assume the worst about others based on limited information.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement carries profound wisdom and practical implications for our daily lives. It encourages us to adopt a more compassionate and understanding approach towards others. We should refrain from hastily judging or condemning individuals based on their apparent flaws, as we may not be aware of the hidden virtues they possess.

This Hadith also serves as a reminder for self-reflection. Just as we should not judge others based on their external faults, we should also strive to recognize and rectify our own hidden imperfections. It urges us to focus on self-improvement and to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for our shortcomings.

In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us the importance of withholding judgment and assuming the best about others. It reminds us that not every fault is manifested, and we should strive to cultivate a mindset of compassion, understanding, and forgiveness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to embody these teachings in our interactions with others and in our personal growth.
