(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Forebearing)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he advises us to adopt three important qualities in our lives: forbearance in times of anger, patience and courage in times of fear, and moderation in our requests.

The first quality mentioned is (halima) "حَلِيماً", which translates to "forbearing" or "patient" in English. This means that when we find ourselves in moments of anger or frustration, we should strive to control our emotions and respond with patience and forbearance. This is in line with the teachings of the Quran, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:134):

Those who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.

The second quality mentioned is (sabura) "صَبُوراً", which means "patient" or "courageous" in the face of fear. This teaches us that in times of fear or danger, we should remain patient and steadfast, trusting in Allah's (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) plan and seeking His protection. The Quran emphasizes the importance of patience in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:153):

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

The third quality mentioned is (mujmila) "مُجْمِلاً", which can be translated as "moderate" or "balanced" in our requests. This means that we should not be excessive or greedy in our desires, but rather seek what is necessary and beneficial for us. The Quran reminds us of the importance of moderation in Surah Al-Isra (17:29):

And do not make your hand [as] chained to your neck or extend it completely and [thereby] become blamed and insolvent.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to adopt these qualities in order to lead a balanced and righteous life. By being forbearing in times of anger, we can avoid unnecessary conflicts and maintain harmonious relationships with others. By being patient and courageous in times of fear, we can overcome challenges and obstacles with strength and resilience. And by being moderate in our requests, we can avoid greed and excess, and be content with what Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) has blessed us with.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for excellence in their character and conduct, following the teachings of the Quran and the noble example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). It encourages us to control our emotions, remain patient in times of difficulty, and seek moderation in all aspects of our lives. By embodying these qualities, we can attain spiritual growth and become better individuals, pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and benefiting society as a whole.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to practice these virtues and follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May He bless us with patience, forbearance, and moderation in all aspects of our lives. Ameen.
