أقْوَى النّاسِ أعْظَمُهُمْ سُلْطاناً عَلى نَفْسِهِ۔
The strongest of people is one who has the greatest command over his soul.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Soul And Holding It To Account)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he states,
The strongest of people is one who has the greatest command over his soul.
Let us delve into the meaning and significance of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (aqwa) "أقْوَى" in Arabic refers to strength, power, or might. It signifies the ability to overcome challenges and resist temptations. The word (annas) "النّاسِ" refers to people, encompassing all individuals. (a'zamuhum) "أعْظَمُهُمْ" means the greatest or the most significant among them. Finally, (sultan) "سُلْطاناً" refers to command, control, or authority.
To understand the depth of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.
This verse highlights the importance of self-control and self-discipline. The strongest among us are those who have the ability to control their desires, emotions, and impulses, even in the face of adversity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:64), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And incite [to senselessness] whoever you can among them with your voice and assault them with your horses and foot soldiers and become a partner in their wealth and their children and promise them.
This verse reminds us of the constant battle between our own souls and external influences. The strongest individuals are those who can resist the temptations and distractions of this world, maintaining control over their own selves.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of self-mastery and self-discipline. It is not physical strength or dominance over others that defines true strength, but rather the ability to govern one's own soul. This strength lies in the ability to resist sinful desires, control anger, and maintain patience in the face of hardships.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this quality throughout his life. His knowledge and wisdom allowed him to have complete command over his soul, enabling him to make wise decisions and remain steadfast in the face of challenges. His unwavering commitment to justice, truth, and righteousness serves as an inspiration for all Muslims.
The consequences of having the greatest command over one's soul are profound. It leads to spiritual growth, inner peace, and a closer connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It enables individuals to resist the temptations of this world and focus on the ultimate goal of attaining the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Moreover, it allows individuals to become a source of guidance and inspiration for others, as they witness the strength and resilience in the face of trials.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of self-reflection and self-improvement. We should strive to strengthen our willpower, control our desires, and develop self-discipline. By doing so, we can become the strongest of people, not in physical strength, but in our ability to overcome our own weaknesses and maintain control over our souls.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to have the greatest command over our souls. May He guide us on the path of righteousness and bless us with the ability to resist temptations and remain steadfast in our faith. Ameen.
