لِيَكُنْ سَميرُكَ القُرْآنَ۔
Let your nightly conversation partner be the Qur’an.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Qur’an)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "لِيَكُنْ سَميرُكَ القُرْآنَ۔" This can be translated into English as,
Let your nightly conversation partner be the Qur’an.
To understand the depth and significance of this enlightening Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the important words used in this Hadith.
The word (samiruka) "سَمِيرُكَ" is derived from the root word (samar) "سَمَرَ", which means to converse or engage in conversation. It implies having a companion with whom one engages in dialogue, seeking guidance, knowledge, and understanding. In this context, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is advising Muslims to make the Qur'an their constant companion, engaging in a deep and meaningful conversation with it.
The word (al-Qur'an) "القُرْآنَ" refers to the Holy Quran, the divine scripture revealed to our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is the ultimate source of guidance for all Muslims, containing the words of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and the teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ).
To support the exegesis of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran itself. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 185,
The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.
This verse emphasizes the Quran's role as a source of guidance for humanity.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qamar, Ayah 17, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?
This verse highlights the ease with which the Quran can be understood and remembered, encouraging Muslims to engage with it regularly.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement urges Muslims to make the Quran their constant companion, especially during the night. The night is a time of tranquility and reflection, providing an ideal environment for deep contemplation and understanding of the Quran's teachings.
By making the Quran our nightly conversation partner, we open ourselves up to a multitude of benefits. Firstly, it allows us to gain knowledge and wisdom from the divine words of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The Quran is a vast ocean of knowledge, covering various aspects of life, including spirituality, morality, and guidance for personal and societal matters.
Secondly, engaging with the Quran on a regular basis helps us develop a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It deepens our understanding of His attributes, His commands, and His love for His creation. This connection strengthens our faith and helps us navigate the challenges of life with wisdom and resilience.
Thirdly, the Quran serves as a source of solace and comfort during times of difficulty and hardship. It provides guidance and reassurance, reminding us of Allah's mercy and His promise to never abandon His believers. By making the Quran our nightly companion, we find solace in its verses and draw strength from its teachings.
Moreover, engaging with the Quran regularly helps us internalize its teachings and apply them in our daily lives. It serves as a guide for our actions, shaping our character and behavior in accordance with the principles of Islam. By making the Quran our constant companion, we strive to embody its teachings and become better Muslims.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,
Let your nightly conversation partner be the Qur’an,
emphasizes the importance of engaging with the Quran regularly and deeply. By making the Quran our constant companion, we gain knowledge, develop a strong connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), find solace in its verses, and apply its teachings in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us all with the ability to make the Quran our true companion and guide.
