Justice suffices as a means of governance.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Justice And The Just)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَفى بِالعَدْلِ سائِساً۔" which translates to

Justice suffices as a means of governance.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance and sufficiency of justice in establishing and maintaining a just and equitable society.

The word (adl) "عَدْلِ" in this Hadith refers to justice, fairness, and equity. It encompasses the idea of giving each person their due rights and treating them impartially. Justice is a fundamental principle in Islam, as it is repeatedly emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah An-Nisa, verse 135:

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of justice, even if it goes against our own interests or the interests of our loved ones. It reminds us that Allah is the ultimate judge, and we should not let personal biases or desires cloud our sense of justice.

Another verse that supports the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is found in Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 9:

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice. It encourages Muslims to strive for justice and fairness, even in times of conflict. It reminds us that Allah loves those who act justly and seek to establish justice in all aspects of their lives.

Imam Ali's statement,

Justice suffices as a means of governance,

carries profound implications. It implies that justice is not just a desirable quality, but it is essential for effective governance. When justice is upheld, it leads to a harmonious and balanced society where everyone's rights are protected.

Justice in governance ensures that laws are applied equally to all individuals, regardless of their social status, wealth, or power. It prevents the abuse of authority and promotes accountability. When justice is the guiding principle, people have confidence in the system and trust in their leaders.

Furthermore, justice in governance fosters social cohesion and unity. It creates an environment where individuals feel valued and respected, regardless of their background. This inclusivity and fairness promote a sense of belonging and contribute to the overall well-being of society.

Conversely, the absence of justice in governance leads to oppression, corruption, and social unrest. When people are denied their rights, marginalized, or discriminated against, it creates a breeding ground for discontent and instability. History has shown us that societies that lack justice eventually crumble under the weight of injustice.

Imam Ali's enlightening Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims that justice is not just a lofty ideal, but a practical necessity. It is incumbent upon us, as individuals and as a collective, to strive for justice in all aspects of our lives. Whether it is in our personal relationships, our interactions with others, or in the systems and institutions we create, justice must be at the forefront.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of justice as a means of governance. It reminds us that justice is not just a desirable quality, but an essential component for a just and equitable society. By upholding justice in our actions and striving for justice in our governance, we can contribute to the establishment of a just and harmonious society, as envisioned by Islam. May Allah guide us all to be just and fair in our dealings and grant us the ability to establish justice in all aspects of our lives.
