Allah, spare our lives and their lives, restore the ties between us and them, rescue them [and guide them] from their misguidance, until those who are ignorant of the truth may recognize it and those are persistent in sinning and disloyalty [and in their enmity towards us] may desist from it.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Supplication And The Supplicant)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is a supplication to Allah, seeking His protection, guidance, and reconciliation between the believers and those who oppose them. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this profound supplication in light of the Quran.

The first part of the supplication states,

Allah, spare our lives and their lives.

This highlights the importance of preserving life and seeking protection from harm. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the sanctity of life in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 32, where He says,

Whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption [done] in the land - it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.

This verse emphasizes the value of every human life and encourages the preservation of life.

The supplication continues,

restore the ties between us and them.

This part emphasizes the importance of maintaining and strengthening the bonds of kinship and unity among Muslims and even with those who oppose them. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 61,

And if they incline to peace, then incline to it [also] and rely upon Allah. Indeed, it is He who is the Hearing, the Knowing.

This verse encourages Muslims to seek reconciliation and peace, even with those who may have been adversaries.

The supplication further implores,

rescue them [and guide them] from their misguidance.

This part highlights the importance of seeking guidance for ourselves and others. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 186,

And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.

This verse assures us that Allah is always ready to respond to our supplications and guide us towards the right path.

The supplication concludes,

until those who are ignorant of the truth may recognize it and those who are persistent in sinning and disloyalty may desist from it.

This part emphasizes the hope for enlightenment and transformation among those who are ignorant or persist in wrongdoing. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Anfal, verse 29,

O you who have believed, if you fear Allah, He will grant you a criterion and will remove from you your misdeeds and forgive you. And Allah is the possessor of great bounty.

This verse assures us that through fear of Allah and seeking His guidance, individuals can overcome their ignorance and sinful behavior.

In this supplication, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of seeking Allah's protection, guidance, and reconciliation with others. It reminds us of the sanctity of life, the significance of maintaining family ties, the need for guidance, and the hope for transformation. By reflecting upon this supplication and implementing its teachings in our lives, we can strive to create a harmonious and compassionate society, where the truth is recognized, and enmity and wrongdoing are abandoned.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the understanding and ability to practice the teachings of this supplication, and may He guide us all to the straight path.
