إنْ كُنْتمْ زَهَدْتُمْ خَلَصْتُمْ مِنْ شَقاءِ الدُّنيا، وفُزْتُمْ بِدارِ البَقاءِ۔
If you renounce worldly pleasures, you will be free from the wretchedness of this world and prosperous in the everlasting abode.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Renunciation Of Worldly Pleasures)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the concept of renouncing worldly pleasures in order to attain true happiness and success in both this world and the hereafter. Let us delve deeper into the meaning and significance of this profound statement in light of the Quran.
The word (zahadtum) "زَهَدْتُمْ" in the Hadith refers to renouncing or abstaining from worldly pleasures. It implies detachment from material possessions, desires, and the pursuit of temporary gratification. This concept is beautifully captured in the Quranic verse:
(Quran 59:10)
And [there is a share for] those who came after them, saying, 'Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith and put not in our hearts [any] resentment toward those who have believed. Our Lord, indeed You are Kind and Merciful.'
Here, the believers are seeking forgiveness and asking Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) to purify their hearts from any resentment towards their fellow believers. This verse highlights the importance of detaching oneself from negative emotions and worldly attachments, as they can hinder spiritual growth and lead to discontentment.
The phrase (khalashtum min shaqaa'id-dunya)
خَلَصْتُمْ مِنْ شَقاءِ الدُّنيا
in the Hadith refers to being free from the wretchedness and hardships of this world. It implies that by renouncing worldly pleasures, one can attain inner peace, contentment, and liberation from the anxieties and tribulations of worldly life. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran:
(Quran 16:97)
Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life, and We will surely give them their reward [in the Hereafter] according to the best of what they used to do.
This verse assures us that those who strive to do good deeds and lead a righteous life will be granted a life of goodness and tranquility. By prioritizing the eternal rewards over temporary pleasures, believers can find solace and fulfillment in their journey towards Allah's pleasure.
The phrase (wafuztum bidaril-baqaa') "وفُزْتُمْ بِدارِ البَقاءِ" in the Hadith refers to attaining prosperity and success in the everlasting abode, which is the hereafter. It signifies the ultimate reward for those who renounce worldly pleasures and strive for righteousness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in the Quran:
(Quran 79:40-41)
But as for he who feared the position of his Lord and prevented the soul from [unlawful] inclination, then indeed, Paradise will be [his] refuge.
This verse highlights that those who fear Allah and restrain themselves from indulging in unlawful desires will be granted the eternal abode of Paradise. By prioritizing the pleasure of Allah over worldly temptations, believers can secure everlasting success and happiness.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of detachment from worldly pleasures and the pursuit of righteousness. By renouncing the temporary and fleeting pleasures of this world, we can attain true happiness, inner peace, and success in both this life and the hereafter. This requires a shift in perspective, where our focus is directed towards pleasing Allah and seeking His eternal rewards. Let us strive to embody the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and prioritize the everlasting abode over the transient pleasures of this world. May Allah guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us success in both worlds.
