(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Scholar)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إذا رَأيْتَ عالِماً فَكُنْ لَهُ خادِماً۔

This Hadith emphasizes the importance of showing humility and respect towards a true scholar when one comes across them.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by analyzing its key words. The word (ʿāliman) "عالِماً" refers to a knowledgeable person who possesses deep understanding and wisdom in religious matters. This term encompasses individuals who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of knowledge and have acquired profound insights into the teachings of Islam. The word (khādiman) "خادِماً" means to serve or assist someone with utmost devotion and sincerity.

To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Kahf, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 19:16-21)

And mention in the Book, O Muhammad, the story of Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, 'Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah.' He said, 'I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy.' She said, 'How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?' He said, 'Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.''

In this ayah, we witness the humility and servitude of Maryam (peace be upon her) towards the angel who appeared before her. Despite being chosen by Allah for a great miracle, she did not boast or question the angel's presence. Instead, she sought refuge in Allah and submitted herself to His will. This exemplifies the attitude we should adopt when encountering a true scholar - one of humility, respect, and readiness to serve.

Another verse that sheds light on the importance of honoring scholars can be found in Surah Al-Anbiya, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:73)

And We made them leaders guiding by Our command. And We inspired to them the doing of good deeds, establishment of prayer, and giving of zakah; and they were worshippers of Us.

This verse highlights the role of the prophets as leaders and guides, entrusted by Allah with the responsibility of imparting knowledge and guiding people towards righteousness. It emphasizes the significance of following the teachings and guidance of these chosen individuals. Similarly, when we come across a true scholar who has dedicated their life to the pursuit of knowledge and the dissemination of truth, it is incumbent upon us to recognize their leadership and guidance, and to serve them with respect and humility.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages us to be servants to scholars, not just in a literal sense, but also in terms of seeking knowledge from them, benefiting from their wisdom, and implementing their teachings in our lives. By doing so, we not only honor the scholars but also enrich our own spiritual journey and strengthen our connection with Allah.

Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder that true knowledge is not merely an intellectual pursuit, but rather a transformative experience that should lead us to humility, compassion, and service towards others. It reminds us that knowledge should not be used for personal gain or to elevate oneself above others, but rather to benefit humanity and to bring people closer to Allah.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to recognize and honor the true scholars among us by serving them with humility and respect. It reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge from those who have dedicated their lives to understanding and teaching the teachings of Islam. By doing so, we not only benefit from their wisdom but also uphold the values of humility, service, and devotion that are integral to our faith. May Allah guide us all on the path of knowledge and righteousness.
