(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Turns And Benevolent Actions)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Doing a good turn is the best acquisition [for the Hereafter], and generosity is the best ornament.

This profound statement highlights the importance of performing acts of kindness and displaying generosity in our lives. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of the words used in this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (ifdāl) "إفضال" in Arabic refers to doing a good turn or performing acts of kindness. It encompasses any action that brings benefit or happiness to others. This includes helping the needy, showing compassion, and being of service to our fellow human beings. The word (qinīyah) "قنية" means acquisition or possession. Here, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that performing acts of kindness is the best acquisition one can have in the Hereafter.

The second part of the Hadith states, (was-sakhā'u ahsanu hilyah) "والسَّخاءُ أحْسَنُ حِلْيَة", which translates to

generosity is the best ornament.

The word (sakhā') "سخاء" refers to generosity, which encompasses giving freely and selflessly. It is not limited to material possessions but also includes giving one's time, knowledge, and support. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that generosity is the best ornament, highlighting its beauty and value in the eyes of Allah.

The Quran provides numerous verses that support the teachings of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:195),

And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.

This verse encourages Muslims to spend in the way of Allah and perform acts of goodness. It emphasizes the importance of generosity and highlights that Allah loves those who do good.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.

This verse highlights the significance of seeking Allah's help and guidance in our actions. By performing acts of kindness and displaying generosity, we seek Allah's blessings and sustenance.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize acts of kindness and generosity in their lives. It emphasizes that these actions are not only beneficial for others but also bring immense rewards in the Hereafter. When we perform acts of kindness, we not only bring joy to those around us but also strengthen our relationship with Allah. Our actions reflect our faith and serve as a means of attaining closeness to Allah.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His teachings, including this Hadith, provide guidance for Muslims in all aspects of life. By following his example and incorporating acts of kindness and generosity into our daily lives, we can strive to become better individuals and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody the teachings of this Hadith and may He reward us abundantly in this world and the Hereafter.
