(Ghurar al-Hikam: Near Relatives And Keeping Or Cutting Off Ties With Them)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

حِراسَةُ النِّعَمِ في صِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ

which translates to

The protection of blessings is in keeping ties with near relatives.

This enlightening Hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining strong bonds with our family members, especially those who are close to us.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (hirasatu) "حِراسَةُ" means protection or safeguarding. It implies the act of preserving and taking care of something valuable. (ni'am) "النِّعَمِ" refers to blessings, favors, or bounties that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon us. These blessings can be both material and spiritual, such as good health, wealth, knowledge, and a loving family.

The phrase (fi silat al-rahim) "في صِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ" translates to

in keeping ties with near relatives.

Here, (silat al-rahim) "صِلَةِ الرَّحِمِ" refers to maintaining strong and harmonious relationships with our relatives, particularly those who are close to us in kinship. This includes our parents, siblings, children, and extended family members.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of maintaining family ties and treating our relatives with kindness and respect. In Surah An-Nisa, Ayah 1, Allah says,

And fear Allah through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed, Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.

This verse highlights the connection between fearing Allah and maintaining family ties. It reminds us that our relationships with our relatives are not only a social obligation but also a means of seeking Allah's pleasure.

In Surah Al-Isra, Ayah 23-24, Allah says,

And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small.'

These verses highlight the importance of honoring and respecting our parents, who are among our closest relatives. It teaches us to treat them with kindness, even in their old age, and to pray for their well-being.

The consequences of maintaining ties with our relatives are numerous. Firstly, it fosters love, unity, and harmony within the family. When we actively engage with our relatives, we strengthen the bonds that connect us, creating a sense of belonging and support. This unity brings about a peaceful and loving environment, which is essential for the well-being of all family members.

Secondly, maintaining family ties is a means of seeking Allah's pleasure. By fulfilling our obligations towards our relatives, we demonstrate our obedience to Allah's commandments. This act of worship earns us His blessings and mercy. Allah says in Surah Ar-Rum, Ayah 21,

And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed, in that are signs for a people who give thought.

This verse highlights the divine wisdom behind the creation of family relationships, emphasizing the importance of affection and mercy between spouses and family members.

Moreover, maintaining ties with our relatives is a source of personal growth and development. Our family members play a significant role in shaping our character, values, and beliefs. By engaging with them and learning from their experiences, we broaden our horizons and gain valuable insights. This interaction allows us to grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of maintaining ties with our near relatives. By safeguarding these relationships, we protect the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). The Quranic verses mentioned further emphasize the significance of family ties and the rewards that come with fulfilling this duty. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to uphold these bonds and may He bless our families with love, unity, and prosperity.
