The intellect is the leader of the army of the Most Merciful and vain desire is the chief of the army of Satan, and the soul is pulled back and forth between them, so whichever of them is victorious, it (i.e. the soul) is in its domain.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Intellect)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he beautifully describes the dynamics of the human soul and its struggle between the forces of intellect and vain desire. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its meanings and implications in the light of the Quran.
The Hadith begins by stating that
the intellect is the leader of the army of the Most Merciful.
Here, the word (intellect) "عَقْلُ" refers to the faculty of reason and understanding bestowed upon human beings by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is through our intellect that we are able to discern right from wrong, make informed decisions, and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
The phrase (the leader of the army of the Most Merciful) "صاحِبُ جَيْشِ الرَّحْمنِ" emphasizes the noble position of the intellect in guiding us towards righteousness and aligning our actions with the will of Allah. It is like a commander leading an army, guiding and directing us towards the path of righteousness and mercy.
To further understand the significance of the intellect, we can turn to the Quran. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding
This verse highlights the importance of intellect in recognizing the signs of Allah's creation and understanding the purpose of our existence.
On the other hand, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that
vain desire is the chief of the army of Satan.
The term (vain desire) "هَوَى" refers to base desires and inclinations that lead us away from the path of righteousness. It is the whisperings of Satan that entice us towards sinful actions and temptations.
The phrase (the chief of the army of Satan) "قَائِدُ جَيْشِ الشَّيْطَانِ" highlights the destructive influence of vain desires in leading us astray from the straight path. Just as a commander leads an army, vain desires act as the driving force behind our sinful actions, pulling us away from the remembrance of Allah and the pursuit of righteousness.
To comprehend the detrimental effects of vain desires, we can refer to the Quranic verse in Surah Yusuf, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against following one's desires, saying, (Quran 12:53)
Indeed, the soul is a persistent enjoiner of evil, except those upon which my Lord has mercy
This verse emphasizes the inherent inclination of the soul towards evil desires, which can only be overcome through the mercy and guidance of Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further explains that the soul is pulled back and forth between the intellect and vain desire, and its ultimate state is determined by whichever force emerges victorious. This constant struggle within the soul reflects the ongoing battle between good and evil, between the forces of righteousness and temptation.
The consequences of this struggle are profound. If the intellect prevails and guides the soul, it remains within the domain of righteousness and mercy. However, if vain desires overpower the intellect, the soul falls into the domain of sin and disobedience. This highlights the critical role of the intellect in shaping our moral compass and determining the course of our actions.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the constant struggle we face in our daily lives. It is a reminder to nurture and strengthen our intellect, seeking knowledge and understanding of the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). By doing so, we empower ourselves to resist the temptations of vain desires and align our actions with the will of Allah.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the eternal battle between the forces of intellect and vain desire within our souls. It emphasizes the importance of nurturing our intellect and seeking guidance from the Quran in order to overcome the temptations of Satan and remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to be guided by our intellect and protect us from the influence of vain desires.
