مَنْ يُجَرِّبْ يَزْدَدْ حَزْماً۔
One who experiences, increases in judiciousness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Experience)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ يُجَرِّبْ يَزْدَدْ حَزْماً۔
This can be translated as,
One who experiences, increases in judiciousness.
Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (yujarrib) "يُجَرِّبْ" is derived from the root word (jaraba) "جَرَبَ", which means to experience or to test. It implies going through trials and challenges in life. The word (yazdad) "يَزْدَدْ" is derived from the root word (zadada) "زَدَدَ", which means to increase or to grow. And the word (hazman) "حَزْماً" refers to judiciousness, wisdom, and prudence.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...
This verse reminds us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, never tests us beyond our capabilities. Every trial we face is an opportunity for growth and development.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2-3), Allah says,
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
These verses highlight the inevitability of trials and tests in the life of a Muslim. It is through these experiences that we are given the chance to increase in our judiciousness and wisdom. When faced with challenges, we are forced to reflect, make decisions, and take actions. This process of trial and error allows us to learn from our mistakes and grow in our understanding of the world around us.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, emphasizes the importance of experiencing trials. He teaches us that it is through these experiences that we can develop a stronger sense of judiciousness. Just as a sword is forged in the fire and shaped through intense heat, our character and wisdom are honed through the trials we face.
For example, when we encounter financial difficulties, we are compelled to make wise financial decisions, budget our expenses, and seek sustainable solutions. Through this experience, we learn the importance of financial responsibility and develop the ability to make judicious choices in the future.
Similarly, when faced with interpersonal conflicts, we are challenged to exercise patience, empathy, and understanding. These experiences teach us the value of effective communication, conflict resolution, and maintaining healthy relationships. We become more judicious in our interactions with others, striving to promote harmony and unity.
The consequences of experiencing trials and increasing in judiciousness are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens our faith and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). As we navigate through challenges, we realize our dependence on Him and seek His guidance and support. This deepens our connection with the Divine and strengthens our spiritual resilience.
Secondly, it enhances our decision-making abilities. By going through trials, we gain valuable insights and wisdom that enable us to make better choices in various aspects of our lives. We become more discerning, weighing the consequences of our actions and making decisions that align with our values and principles.
Lastly, experiencing trials and increasing in judiciousness allows us to serve as a source of guidance and support for others. Our own experiences equip us with the empathy and understanding needed to assist those who may be going through similar challenges. We become a source of inspiration and strength, helping others navigate their own trials and grow in their own judiciousness.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that one who experiences trials and challenges in life increases in judiciousness. Through these experiences, we learn, grow, and develop wisdom. The Quranic verses support this notion, emphasizing the inevitability of tests and trials in the life of a Muslim. By embracing these challenges and seeking guidance from Allah, we can navigate through them with grace and emerge stronger, wiser, and more judicious. May Allah grant us the strength and wisdom to face our trials and increase in judiciousness.
