كُلُّ فَقْر يُسَدُّ إلاّ فَقْرَ الحُمْقِ۔
All [forms of] poverty can be redressed except the poverty of foolishness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Poverty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
All [forms of] poverty can be redressed except the poverty of foolishness.
This beautiful saying highlights the significance of knowledge and wisdom in overcoming poverty, not just in material terms, but also in intellectual and spiritual aspects.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (faqar) "فَقْر" translates to "poverty" and refers to a state of lacking or being in need. It encompasses various dimensions, including financial, intellectual, and spiritual poverty. The term (al-humq) "الحُمْقِ" means "foolishness" or "ignorance" and signifies a lack of understanding, wisdom, and insight.
To shed light on the significance of knowledge and wisdom in overcoming poverty, we turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:80),
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and guidance from Allah to navigate through life's challenges and overcome poverty in all its forms.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:269), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,
He [Allah] grants wisdom to whom He pleases; and whoever is granted wisdom is indeed given a great good.
This verse highlights that wisdom is a divine gift bestowed upon those whom Allah chooses. It is through wisdom that one can overcome the poverty of foolishness and attain prosperity in all aspects of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom. By acquiring knowledge, one can address financial poverty through education, entrepreneurship, and economic empowerment. Additionally, intellectual poverty can be overcome by seeking knowledge in various fields, such as science, literature, and philosophy. Spiritual poverty can be redressed by deepening one's understanding of religion, connecting with Allah through prayer and worship, and seeking spiritual enlightenment.
The consequences of neglecting knowledge and wisdom are dire. Ignorance leads to poor decision-making, lack of critical thinking, and an inability to recognize opportunities for growth and development. It hinders personal and societal progress, perpetuating cycles of poverty and underdevelopment. Conversely, knowledge and wisdom empower individuals to make informed choices, contribute positively to society, and uplift themselves and others from poverty.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom in all aspects of life. It serves as a call to action to invest in education, cultivate intellectual curiosity, and seek guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his purified progeny. By doing so, Muslims can overcome the poverty of foolishness and attain prosperity in this world and the Hereafter.
May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek knowledge, overcome all forms of poverty, and lead a life of prosperity and righteousness.
