(Ghurar al-Hikam: Waging War)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنَّكَ إنْ حارَبْتَ اللّهَ حُرِبْتَ وهَلَكْتَ۔

This can be translated as,

Indeed, if you fight against Allah, you will be defeated and destroyed.

Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran. The key word in this Hadith is (harabta) "حارَبْتَ", which means "to fight against" or "to wage war." It signifies engaging in a battle or conflict against Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This can be understood as going against the divine commandments, disobeying His laws, or opposing His will.

To comprehend the consequences of fighting against Allah, we turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:120),

And never will the Jews or the Christians approve of you until you follow their religion. Say, 'Indeed, the guidance of Allah is the [only] guidance.' If you were to follow their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would have against Allah no protector or helper.

This verse highlights the importance of adhering to the guidance of Allah and not following the desires of others. If one chooses to fight against Allah's guidance by adopting the beliefs or practices of others, they will find themselves defeated and devoid of any support or assistance from Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Mujadila (58:22), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

You will not find a people who believe in Allah and the Last Day having affection for those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, even if they were their fathers or their sons or their brothers or their kindred.

This verse emphasizes the importance of aligning oneself with the believers and not supporting those who oppose Allah and His Messenger. By fighting against Allah's commandments and siding with those who oppose Him, one will face defeat and destruction in this world and the hereafter.

The consequences of fighting against Allah are not limited to the individual alone, but they also have wider implications for society. When individuals go against the divine laws and principles, it leads to corruption, injustice, and societal decay. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states in Surah Al-Rum (30:41),

Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].

This verse highlights that when people deviate from the path of Allah and engage in actions that are contrary to His commandments, corruption spreads in society. This corruption is a consequence of their own actions, and it serves as a reminder for them to return to the path of righteousness.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we understand that fighting against Allah leads to defeat and destruction. It is a warning against opposing the divine guidance and aligning oneself with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger. The consequences of such actions are not only personal but also societal, as they lead to corruption and decay.

As Muslims, we should strive to align ourselves with the teachings of the Quran and the guidance of the Prophet Muhammad () and his Ahl al-Bayt. We should avoid engaging in actions that go against the commandments of Allah and work towards establishing a just and righteous society. May Allah guide us all on the straight path and protect us from fighting against Him.
