Hadith #9439

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for all Muslims about the value and significance of time in our lives. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Verily your moments are portions of your life, so do not pass your time except in that which will save you [in the Hereafter].

Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (awqatak) "أوْقاتَكَ" refers to "your moments" or "your time." It emphasizes the importance of every single moment in our lives. The word (ajza'u) "أجْزاءُ" means "portions" or "parts." It highlights the fact that our lives are composed of these individual moments, and each moment carries its own significance.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us not to "pass our time" or "pass our moments" except in that which will save us in the Hereafter. This means that we should not waste our time in activities that do not bring us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) or contribute to our spiritual growth. Instead, we should utilize our time in actions that will benefit us in the eternal life.

To further understand the importance of utilizing our time wisely, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

(Quran 103:1-3)

By time, Indeed, mankind is in loss, Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This Quranic verse emphasizes the value of time and highlights that the majority of people are in a state of loss. However, those who believe in Allah, perform righteous deeds, and encourage one another towards truth and patience are exceptions to this loss. This verse serves as a reminder that our time should be spent in acts of faith, righteousness, and spreading goodness.

Another relevant Quranic verse is found in Surah Al-Asr (Chapter 103), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

(Quran 94:7-8)

So, when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And to your Lord direct [your] longing.

These verses emphasize the importance of utilizing our time in worship and devotion to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). They remind us that after fulfilling our worldly responsibilities, we should turn our attention towards our Creator and direct our longing towards Him. This aligns with the advice of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) to not pass our time except in that which will save us in the Hereafter.

Reflecting on the profound wisdom of this Hadith, we realize that our time on this earth is limited and precious. Every moment that passes is an opportunity for us to draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and secure our salvation in the Hereafter. We must be mindful of how we spend our time, ensuring that it is dedicated to acts of worship, righteous deeds, and seeking knowledge.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the consequences of wasting our time in trivial matters. By neglecting the importance of our moments, we risk losing the opportunity to attain eternal success and salvation. Therefore, let us reflect upon our daily activities and strive to make the most of our time, ensuring that it is spent in actions that will benefit us in this life and the Hereafter.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to understand the value of time and the ability to utilize it in a manner that pleases Him. May He guide us to spend our moments in acts of worship, righteousness, and seeking His pleasure. Ameen.
