بِتَجَنُّبِ الرَّذائِلِ تَنْجُو مِنَ العابِ۔
By keeping away from depravities, you are saved from disgrace.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Depravities)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
بِتَجَنُّبِ الرَّذائِلِ تَنْجُو مِنَ العابِ۔
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of avoiding depravities in order to protect oneself from disgrace.
Let us delve into the meaning of some key words in this Hadith. (tajannub) "تَجَنُّبِ" means to stay away from or avoid, while (ar-raza'il) "الرَّذائِلِ" refers to depravities or immoral acts. Finally, (al-'ab) "العابِ" signifies disgrace or humiliation.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:33),
Say, 'My Lord has only forbidden immoralities - what is apparent of them and what is concealed - and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.'
This verse highlights that Allah has prohibited all forms of immorality, whether they are openly displayed or hidden. It encompasses not only physical acts but also the intentions and thoughts behind them. By abstaining from these immoralities, we safeguard ourselves from disgrace and humiliation.
Another verse that supports the message of this Hadith is found in Surah Al-An'am (6:120), where Allah warns,
And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn [blame for] sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit.
This verse reminds us that even the sins we commit in secret will have consequences. They may not be immediately visible to others, but they will ultimately lead to disgrace and punishment. Therefore, it is crucial for Muslims to refrain from all forms of depravity, whether in public or private, to protect their honor and dignity.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, advises us in this Hadith to avoid depravities. By doing so, we not only preserve our own reputation but also uphold the values and teachings of Islam. Our actions and choices have far-reaching consequences, not only for ourselves but also for the wider Muslim community.
When we engage in immoral acts, we tarnish our own character and reputation. We lose the respect of others and become susceptible to humiliation and disgrace. On the other hand, when we strive to distance ourselves from depravities, we cultivate a sense of self-respect and honor. We become a source of inspiration for others and contribute to the positive image of Islam.
Moreover, avoiding depravities is not merely a matter of external actions; it also encompasses our thoughts and intentions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of our innermost desires and intentions. Therefore, we must purify our hearts and minds from any impure thoughts or intentions that may lead us towards immorality.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of staying away from depravities to protect ourselves from disgrace. By adhering to the teachings of Islam and avoiding immoral acts, both in public and private, we preserve our honor and dignity. Let us strive to be individuals who embody the values of Islam and inspire others through our exemplary conduct. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to stay away from depravities and lead a life of righteousness.
