وتَرْكَ الزِّنا تَحْصيناً لِلأنْسابِ وتَرْكَ اللِّواطِ تَكْثيراً للنَّسْلِ۔
The abandoning of adultery is [prescribed] for safeguarding the descendants and the renouncing of homosexuality is a means of increasing the progeny.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Adultery)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights two important aspects of Islamic teachings: the prohibition of adultery and the renunciation of homosexuality. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (adultery) "زِّنا" refers to any form of sexual relations outside the bounds of marriage. It includes both premarital and extramarital relationships. The word (homosexuality) "لِّواطِ" specifically refers to same-sex relations between males.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to find evidence supporting the teachings of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Isra (17:32),
And do not approach unlawful sexual intercourse. Indeed, it is ever an immorality and is evil as a way.
This verse clearly emphasizes the prohibition of any form of sexual relations outside the framework of a lawful marriage.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf (7:81), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) mentions the story of the people of Lot (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and their immoral behavior. This serves as a stern warning against engaging in homosexuality. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Indeed, you approach men with desire, instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people.
The teachings of this Hadith are rooted in the preservation of lineage and the importance of procreation. Adultery not only destroys the sanctity of marriage but also jeopardizes the lineage and family structure. By abstaining from adultery, Muslims ensure the preservation of their lineage and safeguard the purity of their descendants.
Similarly, the renunciation of homosexuality is emphasized as a means of increasing the progeny. Islam encourages the natural and lawful means of procreation, which is through the union of a man and a woman in marriage. By adhering to this principle, Muslims contribute to the growth and continuity of the human population.
It is important to note that this Hadith does not promote discrimination or hatred towards individuals with same-sex attractions. Islam teaches us to be compassionate and understanding towards all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation. However, it firmly upholds the sanctity of marriage and the natural order of procreation.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the importance of adhering to these principles. By following the teachings of Islam and abstaining from adultery and homosexuality, Muslims uphold the values of purity, family, and the preservation of lineage.
In conclusion, this Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to uphold the sanctity of marriage, preserve their lineage, and contribute to the growth of the human population. It is a call to adhere to the teachings of Islam and to abstain from any form of sexual relations outside the bounds of marriage. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to follow His commandments and grant us the strength to overcome our desires.
