Words are in your control until you have not uttered them; but when you have spoken them out you are under their control. Therefore, guard your tongue as you guard your gold and silver, for often one expression snatches away a blessing and invites punishment.

(Nahj al-Balagha — Peak of Eloquence: Hadith #381)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the power and significance of our words. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) begins by stating that words are within our control until we speak them. This highlights the importance of being mindful of our speech and the responsibility that comes with it. Once we utter our words, we become subject to their consequences and are bound by their impact.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) compares the value of guarding our tongue to that of guarding our gold and silver. Just as we protect our precious possessions, we should also protect our speech. This analogy emphasizes the value and significance of our words. Just as gold and silver have inherent worth, our words have the power to bring blessings or invite punishment.

To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Isra (17:36),

And do not pursue that of which you have no knowledge. Indeed, the hearing, the sight and the heart - about all those [one] will be questioned.

This verse highlights the importance of being cautious about what we say, as we will be held accountable for our words.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Qalam (68:10), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

Indeed, your Lord is in observation.

This verse serves as a reminder that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is aware of everything we say and do. Therefore, we should be mindful of our speech and ensure that our words are in line with the teachings of Islam.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith teaches us that our words have the power to either bring blessings or invite punishment. It is crucial to reflect on the consequences of our speech before uttering any words. One careless or hurtful remark can snatch away a blessing, damage relationships, or even lead to severe consequences.

For example, a kind and encouraging word can uplift someone's spirits, provide comfort, and strengthen bonds. On the other hand, a harsh or disrespectful word can hurt someone deeply, damage trust, and create animosity. Our words have the power to shape our relationships, influence our own well-being, and impact the lives of others.

Therefore, it is essential for us as Muslims to be mindful of our speech and strive to use our words for good. We should aim to speak with kindness, compassion, and wisdom, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad () and the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we can create a positive and harmonious environment, strengthen our connection with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and earn His blessings.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder of the power and significance of our words. It urges us to guard our tongue as we guard our precious possessions, for our words have the potential to bring blessings or invite punishment. By being mindful of our speech and using our words for good, we can create a positive impact in our lives and the lives of others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to speak with kindness and wisdom.
