Hadith #8745

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of active listening and understanding. Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening saying in light of the Quran.

The word (Fasma'u) "فَاسْمَعُوا" in the Hadith means "listen attentively" or

hear with full attention.

It implies not just hearing the words, but actively engaging with them, paying close attention, and being fully present in the moment. This is a call to Muslims to be attentive and receptive when receiving knowledge or guidance.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of active listening in the Quran as well. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 7:204)

And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy

This verse highlights the significance of actively listening to the Quran, as it is a means of attaining Allah's mercy.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further advises us to (Wa'u) "وَعُوا", which means

open the ears of your hearts.

This phrase signifies the need to go beyond the physical act of hearing and to engage our hearts and souls in the process of understanding. It implies that true comprehension comes from a deep connection with the message being conveyed.

The Quran also emphasizes the importance of opening the ears of our hearts. In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah says, (Quran 22:46)

Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blinded, but blinded are the hearts which are within the breasts

This verse reminds us that true understanding comes from a heart that is receptive and free from spiritual blindness.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) concludes the Hadith by saying, (Tafhamu) "تَفْهَمُوا", which means

so that you may understand.

This emphasizes the ultimate goal of active listening and opening the ears of our hearts - to gain true comprehension and insight. It is not enough to merely hear the words; we must strive to internalize and understand the deeper meanings and implications.

The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of understanding and reflection. In Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah says, (Quran 47:24)

Do they not then reflect upon the Quran? Or are there locks upon [their] hearts?

This verse highlights the need for Muslims to deeply contemplate and reflect upon the Quranic teachings in order to gain true understanding.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advice in this Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of active listening, engaging our hearts, and seeking true comprehension. By doing so, we can attain a deeper understanding of the teachings of Islam and apply them in our lives. It is through this active engagement with knowledge that we can truly benefit from the wisdom and guidance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to listen attentively, open the ears of our hearts, and understand the profound teachings of Islam. May He guide us to implement this knowledge in our lives and seek His mercy and blessings.
