قَليلٌ يَخِفُّ عَلَيْكَ عَمَلُهُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ كَثير تَسْتَثْقِلُ حَمْلَهُ۔
Little which is easy for you to act upon is better than a lot that is too heavy for you to bear.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Worship And The Worshipper)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of performing good deeds, even if they may seem small or insignificant. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us that a small action that is easy for us to carry out is better than a larger action that becomes burdensome and difficult for us to fulfill.
Let us now delve into the deeper meaning of this profound Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran. The key words in this Hadith are (little) "قَليلٌ", (easy) "يَخِفُّ", (a lot) "كَثير", and (heavy) "تَسْتَثْقِلُ".
The word (little) "قَليلٌ" refers to a small quantity or a small amount of something. It signifies that even a small action, when performed sincerely and with good intentions, holds great value in the sight of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This is emphasized in the Quran in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 32, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
Whoever saves one [a life] - it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.
This verse demonstrates that even saving a single life is of immense significance.
The word (easy) "يَخِفُّ" indicates that the action being referred to in the Hadith should be something that is within our capabilities and does not cause us excessive hardship or difficulty. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, that He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Therefore, it is important for us to choose actions that we can perform easily and consistently, rather than overwhelming ourselves with tasks that we may struggle to fulfill.
On the other hand, the word (a lot) "كَثير" signifies a larger quantity or a greater amount of something. While performing a lot of good deeds may seem commendable, the Hadith cautions us against taking on more than we can handle. It is important to strike a balance and not overburden ourselves to the point where we are unable to fulfill our obligations. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises moderation in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 31, saying,
O children of Adam, take your adornment at every masjid, and eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess.
The word (heavy) "تَسْتَثْقِلُ" refers to a burden or a weight that becomes difficult to bear. This can be understood as the consequence of taking on more than we can handle. When we overload ourselves with excessive responsibilities or commitments, we may become overwhelmed and find it challenging to fulfill them all. This can lead to exhaustion, burnout, and a decline in the quality of our actions. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286, that He does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. Therefore, it is important for us to be mindful of our limitations and not take on more than we can bear.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we can draw several important lessons. Firstly, it teaches us the value of sincerity and intention in our actions. Regardless of the size or magnitude of the deed, what truly matters is the purity of our intentions and the sincerity with which we perform it. Secondly, it emphasizes the importance of balance and moderation in our lives. We should strive to strike a balance between our religious obligations, personal responsibilities, and self-care. Lastly, it reminds us to be mindful of our capabilities and not to overburden ourselves with excessive tasks or commitments.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to prioritize quality over quantity in their actions. It encourages us to focus on performing small, manageable deeds with sincerity and good intentions, rather than overwhelming ourselves with burdensome tasks. By doing so, we can ensure that our actions are meaningful, sustainable, and pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to implement these teachings in our lives.
