— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Qur’an)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his righteous companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of reflecting upon the verses of the Qur'an and extracting valuable lessons from them. The word (tadabbaru) "تَدَبَّرُوا" means to ponder deeply and contemplate, while (ayatil-Qur'an) "آياتِ القُرْآنِ" refers to the verses of the Qur'an. The word (i'tabiru) "اعْتَبِرُوا" means to take heed, learn lessons, and apply them in our lives. The phrase (innahu ablighu al-ibar) "إِنَّهُ أبْلَغُ العِبَرِ" means that the Qur'an is the most comprehensive and effective source of lessons and teachings.
This Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is in perfect harmony with the teachings of the Qur'an itself. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly encourages us to reflect upon the Qur'an and learn from its profound wisdom. In Surah Al-An'am, verse 50, Allah says, (6:50)
Say, 'I do not tell you that I possess the treasures of Allah, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me.' Say, 'Can the blind and the seeing be alike? Will you not then reflect?'
This verse highlights the importance of reflection and contemplation. It urges us to ponder upon the Qur'an and its teachings, as it is the source of divine guidance. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hashr, verse 21, Allah says, (59:21)
If We had sent down this Qur'an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.
This verse emphasizes the profound impact that the Qur'an can have on the hearts and minds of individuals. It illustrates that if even a mountain were to receive the Qur'an, it would be filled with awe and reverence. This serves as a reminder for us to reflect upon the Qur'an and allow its teachings to transform our lives.
Reflecting upon the verses of the Qur'an allows us to gain a deeper understanding of its message and apply it to our daily lives. It enables us to derive valuable lessons and guidance from the words of Allah. By contemplating the Qur'an, we can develop a stronger connection with our Creator and strengthen our faith.
Furthermore, reflecting upon the Qur'an helps us to gain insight into the wisdom and knowledge of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Imam Ali was known for his unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the Qur'an. He possessed a profound ability to extract lessons and teachings from its verses. His wisdom and insights continue to inspire and guide Muslims to this day.
By pondering upon the Qur'an, we can learn from the experiences of the Prophets, the righteous individuals, and the nations that came before us. We can understand the consequences of their actions and apply these lessons to our own lives. The Qur'an provides us with guidance on various aspects of life, including matters of faith, morality, social justice, and personal development.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for all Muslims to reflect upon the verses of the Qur'an and extract valuable lessons from them. The Qur'an is a comprehensive source of guidance and wisdom, and by contemplating its teachings, we can gain a deeper understanding of our faith and apply it in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to reflect upon the Qur'an and benefit from its profound teachings.
