Just as this world mends, it [also] breaks.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: This World)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الدُّنْيا كَمَا تَجْبُرُ تَكْسِرُ۔

This can be translated as,

Just as this world mends, it [also] breaks.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this thought-provoking saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quranic teachings.

The word (dunya) "دُنْيَا" refers to the temporal world, the material realm in which we currently reside. It encompasses the transient nature of life, the fleeting pleasures and sorrows that we experience. The word (tajbur) "تَجْبُرُ" means to mend or repair, while (taksir) "تَكْسِرُ" means to break or shatter.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting the inherent duality of this world. Just as it has the power to mend and heal, it also possesses the ability to break and destroy. This statement serves as a reminder of the impermanence and fragility of worldly affairs.

The Quranic teachings provide us with numerous verses that support the wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hadid (57:20),

Know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, pomp and mutual boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children.

This verse emphasizes the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits, highlighting their temporary and illusory nature.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:60), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

Whatever you have been given is but a temporary enjoyment of this worldly life, but that which is with Allah is better and more lasting for those who believe and rely upon their Lord.

This verse reminds us that the true and everlasting rewards lie with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), and not in the transient pleasures of this world.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a profound reflection on the nature of this world. It reminds us that just as we experience moments of joy and happiness, we are also bound to encounter hardships and difficulties. This understanding helps us navigate through the challenges of life with patience and resilience.

Moreover, this statement encourages us to detach ourselves from the materialistic pursuits of this world and focus on the eternal realm. It reminds us to prioritize our spiritual growth and seek closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) rather than being consumed by the transitory pleasures and distractions of this world.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, invites us to reflect on the temporary nature of this world and the importance of preparing for the everlasting life to come. By recognizing the dual nature of this world, we can navigate through its ups and downs with a balanced perspective and a steadfast heart.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder of the transient nature of this world. It urges us to prioritize our spiritual growth and seek the eternal rewards that lie with Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By understanding the duality of this world, we can navigate through its challenges with patience, resilience, and a steadfast commitment to our faith. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to comprehend the true nature of this world and guide us towards the path of righteousness.
