(Ghurar al-Hikam: Patience And The Patient)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

إنِ ابْتَلاكُمُ اللّهُ بِمُصيَبَة فَاصْبِرُوا۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

If Allah tests you with some hardship, then be patient.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this amazing Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The word (ibtalakum) "ابْتَلاكُمُ" in this Hadith refers to the trials and tribulations that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) tests His servants with. These tests can come in various forms, such as physical ailments, financial difficulties, loss of loved ones, or any other challenge that one may face in life.

The word (musiba) "مُصيَبَة" in the Hadith means hardship or calamity. It signifies any distressing situation that a person may encounter. It is important to note that these tests and hardships are not punishments from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but rather opportunities for growth and purification of the soul.

Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in the Quran of the purpose behind these trials and tribulations. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 155, Allah says,

And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.

This verse emphasizes that tests and hardships are an inevitable part of life, and it is through patience that one can overcome them.

Patience, or (as-sabr) "الصَّبْر", is a virtue highly praised in Islam. It is the ability to remain steadfast and composed in the face of adversity. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of patience and its rewards. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153, Allah says,

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to be patient when faced with hardships because he understands the transformative power of patience. Patience allows us to maintain our faith and trust in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) during difficult times. It helps us develop resilience, inner strength, and a deeper connection with our Creator.

Moreover, patience in the face of trials and tribulations is a means of attaining spiritual growth and purification. It is through these challenges that we are tested and refined, and our true character is revealed. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 2-3,

Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried? But We have certainly tried those before them, and Allah will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.

When we exhibit patience in the face of hardships, we not only earn the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but we also become a source of inspiration for others. Our patience becomes a means of spreading positivity and hope in the community. It is through our example that others may find solace and strength in their own trials.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the inevitability of tests and hardships in life. It teaches us the importance of patience and its transformative power. Through patience, we can navigate through the challenges of life, strengthen our faith, and attain spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and patience to face our trials with grace and perseverance.
